How to repair your fence or gate

How to repair your fence or gate

Wooden gates and fences can be prone to rot, or to attacks by insects. To prolong their life, try and treat them regularly with wood preservative. It's also a good idea to avoid piling earth up against your fence, and to fit gravel boards at its base.

Top tip - Wood preservative

A coat of preservative will dramatically extend the life of your fence or gate, as most treatments keep fungi and insects at bay for several years. As the wood needs to be completely dry, the best time to apply it is in late summer after a dry period, and when no rain is expected for a day or so. Paint it on with a block paintbrush or use a garden pressure spray - making sure to wear protective gloves (and safety goggles and a mask too, if you're spraying).

A fence is the most popular way of marking a boundary. It's fairly easy to put one up and it's cheaper than building a wall (although you will have to pay for the costs of treating the timber regularly to protect it against weathering).
