Dilbertov - 1 year ago

Almost paper-thin veneer on low grade softwood frame. The underlying softwood was almost balsa wood-like (6 of the 12 screws that went into the door for handles and weather bar found voids or wood so soft that they were to all intents and purposes useless).

The worst aspect of this door is the veneer finish. The wood veneer used is something like ash, that contains oily pores in the grain that will not take a paint finish (I used an expensive professional gloss that I have never had any troubles with before). The factory-applied primer is obviously just a very thin blowover spray coat that is inadequate to deal with the oil pockets.

The veneer is so uneven. It is deeply grained in some rails and panels and completely lacking in any kind of grain in others. The door therefore looks very odd when finished.

Finally, I had to to sort through 6 doors in store to find an undamaged one. Even then, on unwrapping it to fit it, it had numerous dings on edges. These had no corresponding marks on the plastic wrapping so must have been sustained in the factory.
