Save yourself plenty of hard work in the garden with a chainsaw. These powerful tools can be used for a number of backbreaking chores, such as felling trees and chopping logs for firewood. They can help with domestic garden clearance, especially cutting work that’s too much for a shredder, and in times of emergency, such as cutting back fallen branches after a storm. So if you’ve ploughed on with these tough jobs using an axe or saw, consider hanging them up in favour of a chainsaw as we take you through what options are available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for cutting sleepers Bought this month and used for cutting landscape sleepers to build steps and raised beds in garden. It is easy to use just follow the instructions supplied. Takes 10 mind to assemble out of box and tension chain. You will need to buy 'chain saw oil' before you can use it, be sure to get some when buying the saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value I could have bought something very similar for almost twice the price, but although there is a bit of assembly involved I can't fault it. You need to keep adjusting the chain tension at the beginning and keep an eye on it after, but that's normal.Cuts well and seems well made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality budget chainsaw I bought this to deal with a hugely overgrown Leylandii hedge composed of 5 trees with trunks around 20cm thick and 9ft high. The hedge was 40 years old and densely packed with thick, interwoven branch growth. Mains electric chainsaws tend to be lighter than battery and petrol ones and this model is no exception. The power lead is not particularly long though so ensure you have an extension cable to hand. The motor runs up progressively and is relatively quiet. The overrun mechanism works perfectly in that the chain stops moving as soon as the trigger is released, allowing the motor to wind down naturally. There is practically no jolt. An anti kick chain is supplied as standard and I experienced no kickback whatsoever cutting pine, which is a soft wood. I used the chainsaw all day on and off and it probably ran for about an hour in total and used about half a reservoir of oil which seems efficient. I had to chop all the logs and branches into manageable chunks due to limited space so I must have performed nigh on a hundred cuts over the course of the day and I was really impressed. Don't be put off by the minimalist printed cardboard box or the fact that some assembly is required. It is very, very easy to fit the chain and despite my complete lack of patience and short attention span, it was ready to go within ten minutes of opening the box, using the tool provided. DO REMEMBER that even electric chainsaws use oil for the self lubrication system so buy a bottle and fill the reservoir to just below the top. TIP: If you do not have a funnel, remove the screw cap from the oil bottle but do not rip the paper seal off. Instead, pierce it with a car key or similar (I used my car key) on one side near the edge, then again on the opposite side to let the air in. You will be able to fill the reservoir without a single drip using this method. Set the chain tension as explained in the instructions and then try it out making a few small cuts, but then unplug the chainsaw and check the tension again. I found it went loose quite quickly, but then was fine for a while. I adjusted it twice more during the day. I rarely write reviews and have only done so because I popped onto the website to remind myself how cheap this item was and thought it deserved a kind word. However, my back is killing me (no fault of the chainsaw!) after a vigorous day and the hot bath I had after the job was done didn't help much. However, the Gin and Tonic I am sipping as I write seems to be helping somewhat... Don't forget that safety goggles, gloves and strong boots are an absolute must when using any chainsaw. Kind regards Chris

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use, very safe. I have one big problem. I need replacement carbon brushes and cannot source them anywhere. Ive only had the chainsaw for one year. WHY CANT I GET THEM?? Surely you don't expect me to buy a new chainsaw every year!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the Job! I bought this chainsaw for a specific job which it did, exactly as I wanted it to. I was impressed with the item, it was easy to put together and worked extremely well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny I spent the best part of a day trying to cut through a 12" tree trunk with a saw. I vowed never to do that again. I bought this chainsaw yesterday and did in about 10 minutes what I couldn't in about 6 hours. this chainsaw is very easy to use and definately worth the money. The only thing is it dosent come with oil, so it is necessary to put some in before you use it.
