Wouldn't be without mine.

I've had mine for a few years now and I was wondering why there are so many poor reviews. Most of the ones I looked at say that it doesn't work through walls: it's not supposed to, it's for testing cables or even exposed wires. I always check mine before use by tapping it against a known live cable, eg the kettle lead, and if it doesn't beep trying the other side of the cable where the live wire actually is. Some light switches will also show a positive response, but not always. Once I'm sure the battery is fine then I know when the tip is against a live wire and it's not beeping then the live wire isn't, er, live and I'm safe.
There's also another use: if something isn't working then it's easy to check to see if there's power getting to it: touch the mains lead on both sides: the side where the live conductor is will make it beep. If it doesn't beep then there's no power in the mains cable.
This is so much better than the electrical screwdrivers that have a little, barely visible light, if it's actually touching a live wire. I wouldn't be without this.

Bought it 3 weeks ago. Terrible. Will not work on walls or other areas only finds power when u tap on lamp ( like you would not kno lip is there!) but not even around it. Useless and wasted 10£

cannot rely on whether it lights up or not, so not reliable

Pretty much useless this tester. Tested it on a known live wire and it didn’t react until it was touching the wire so it certainly wouldn’t detect a live wire in a plastered wall. It couldn’t even detect the wire as live through the plastic on the socket !!

I purchased this as I needed to find live wires amongst a group and it worked perfectly! Glad I read previous reviews though as you do need to unwrap the batteries before use which I wouldn't have thought to do, it does not state anywhere on the packaging which is pretty bad for B&Q, but once I'd done that, tested it on a few items, then got on with the task at hand. Good value too.
