Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FANTASTIC BRAND Brilliant paint did a great job on our walls.Highly recommend this paint to anyone .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good coverage I used this matte for the lower half of my sons bedroom; two coats with just one tub. Like all cheap matte paints, it chips off and marks easily, but still good value for money, and colour showed true to tester and pallette chart.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great result I had been a bit sceptical about this colour after reading the reviews but as I'd already bought it I figured I'd give it a go and even covering magnolia it's only taken 2 coats. There was no splattering and looks a lovely classy colour. The only negative is say is it's definitely not matt. Bear in mind the picture was only 5 minutes after the second coat but is not patchy at all once dried.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Never to be revisited! I bought this for my son's bedroom, and thought that as it's only a small room, one tub would be sufficient. However, I had to buy a second tub as it's taken two coats, and I'm thinking of applying a third coat to one wall as it's still a bit patchy. As for being matt finish - I've seen less shiny silk finish paint! The only positive I can think of is that there's no splatter when you apply it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality Difficult to work with, when painting an area, the paint wouldn't adhere to the wall, if you went over the same area twice, it would lift off the wall. Meant to be matt but definitely has a sheen to it. Coupled with leaving brush and roller marks, you are left with a patchy finish where some areas are shinier than others - even with 3 coats. Waste of time and money. Bought Dulux to correct this blunder, difference is huge after one coat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a Matt paint This paint took 3 coats before it had an even coverage, which you really wouldn't expect from paint this dark. It also was the shiniest matt paint I've ever seen. Would totally recommend not getting this paint if you're looking for a matt finish. Very disappointing and a complete waste of a weekend. At least B&Q refunded us.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Shiny After 2 coats of using this paint, the finish was very shiny, despite being labelled as matt. It also showed up all paintbrush streaks very easily. We gave up and started again with Dulux.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst paint ever! Very poor, worst paint I've ever used. Definitely not matt as others have said and the coverage is terrible, even with several layered coats the finish is patchy and streaky and this was applied to a matt white wall. Will never touch B&Q paints again and stick to Dulux, thanks for making the simple job of painting a feature wall a nightmare and twice as expensive.
