- Surface Preparation - Surface Preparation - Colron Refined Wood Dye is only absorbed by clean, dry, untreated timber which is free from dirt, oil and grease. Any previously applied finish such as paint, varnish, seal polish or wax must be completely removed. Prepare the surface well. Colron Refined Wood Dye and compatible varnishes provide a transparent finish any marks, blemishes or stains in the substrate will show through. Any discoloured wood should be sanded until an original surface is visible. Sand lightly in the direction of the grain taking care not to over sand or “polish” the surface. Oily hardwoods such as teak, resinous areas and knots should be thoroughly washed with white spirit. Remove any dust using a brush or vacuum cleaner and wipe the surface using a cloth soaked with white spirit. Allow to dry thoroughly.
- Instructions for Use - Colron Refined Wood Dye can be applied with a soft cloth or sponge. When treating large areas such as doors or floors apply the dye one length of floorboard or a section of door at a time to avoid overlaps, work quickly to maintain a wet edge. Application by cloth or sponge will result in a lighter shade. A one coat application is normally sufficient, but colour may be intensified and a more even finish achieved by the application of further coats of Colron Refined Wood Dye. Allow 1 hour between coats. Do not apply more than three coats. Seal the dye using Colron Refined Interior Lacquer. When treating floors use Ronseal Diamond Hard Clear Floor Varnish. Allow the dye to dry for 1 hour prior to application of varnish.

Darker than expected
Easy to apply, dries quickly and absorbs further coats. The colour of the wood dye is a true American Walnut and much darker than suggested by the colour panel in the tin so I’d advise looking up example colours before purchase. The wood would benefit from a wax of varnish after dying to give the desired finish.

colron american walnut - refined
Please don't waste your time and money buying the new colron wood dyes. The product has totally changed along with the design on the tin, it's like a gloopy soup that needs plenty of coats to have the same result as one coat of the old style - which was very liquid and easy to apply with cotton wool. And it's £16 for 250ml. Rubbish.

Colron american walnut by name only
I bought this product thinking is was the same as the old tin i have been buying for years. How wrong was I, Its not even the same colour.and it doesn't penetrated the wood. Used 10 times as much as would have before with negative results.. Save the environment ? not with this stuff. Will look elsewhere to try to find a product similar but colron why? you have destroyed your product and its £12 in B & Q.

Really nice rustic look finish
This was exactly what we wanted for our reclaimed wood headboard. Easily applied with a cloth, good covering and fantastic finish.

Colron American Walnut Wood Dye
For years I've have used to Colron American Walnut Wood Dye to restore / improve rifle stocks. I found it used to really sink deep into the wood and gave a lovely rich finish to even the most economic of wood. I ran out of my last can the other day and popped down to B&Q for a replacement. However, it's not the same stuff at all! NOT AT ALL! It doesn't flow like the old stuff or dry as well. It doesn't penetrate as deeply and the finish is diluted requiring many more applications and STILL does not give the same quality of finish. It looks like what it is - an impersonation of American Walnut unlike the old stuff that looked like the real thing. I was really disappointed and have had to completely change the plans I had for my project.
