Bought this lumpwood as normal, always been very good previous years but this time very disappointed very large pieces struggled to light and get going had to use full box of lighters and still some of the big peces didn't get going.
Not fit for purpose

Such small pieces that they fall through the holes if you are using a smoker. For traditional barbecue they do not hold the heat well at all. I'm not sure 'lump' is a phrase that applies to this. Definitely would never buy again!

Bought the large bag of charcoal last month and was very pleased with it. It was easy to light and burned well.
More shrapnel than charcoal

This stuff is utterly rubbish. There were some lumps that were maybe a an inch to a side, but most of it was not much better than dust - so small it literally pours through the grate and clogs and chokes the fire.

Very easy to light using a chimney starter, there was a lot of dark grey smoke at the start (not a good sign), charcoal was ready to spread on grate after about 12- 15 mins so quite quick. The coals burn at quite a high heat I.e 3/4 of a Weber chimney starter filled produced temp of just under 500f (needed to season my grill as it was my first use on a new grill). Using the vents got temp down to 375f fairly quickly and then temp remained stable for over an hour before I shut down the vents.
Pros are cheap to buy, easy to light, high temp and reasonably long burn time for cheaper coals. Cons are the huge amount of smoke at start, smoke flavour imparted on food tasted a little off, however this could also have been the new grill, the charcoal made a lot of ash and there were no lumps left to save.
Overall I got what I wanted a cheap pack of charcoal to season the grill and to do my first cook on. I'm grateful these were available in store because it seems this time of year you can only get BBQ charcoal online. Will be looking to revert back to my usual charcoal for low n slow BBQing and smokes, but for grilling these are ok.
