Help & Advice

BTU Radiator Calculator

Our BTU (British Thermal Units) calculator will help you to work out the heat requirement for your room, and recommend the number of radiators you will need to comfortably heat it.

What is a BTU?

A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is a measure of heat output from a radiator. Depending on the size of your room, the number and type of windows and what the room is used for, you'll need more or less heat. If you have a higher BTU requirement, it might be better to use more than one radiator to deliver the heat you'll need to a room. The total BTU output of several smaller radiators may meet your needs.

How do I choose the right radiator?

The BTU value of all our radiators is clearly labelled in-store and online, helping you find those which suit your requirements.

Step 1: Which room you are heating?
Step 2: What are the dimensions of the rooms?
Are you measuring in metres or feet?:

How to understand a plumbing & heating system

How to understand a plumbing & heating system

Your home's cold and hot water supply systems will largely be out of sight, with the pipes concealed in walls and under floors. But knowing what type of system you have and where you can find everything is very important for maintenance work, making improvements and, most of all, dealing with emergencies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MiStat mp 710RK09SX - EXCELLENT Just to set the scene this system was fitted in a small 2 bedroom mid- terraced house built in 1992 with thermalite breeze style block work and insulated in the loft I have just had a recent Energy Performance Certificate issued and thanks to my new programmer, thermostat and TRVs I achieved a 4/5 Energy Efficiency Rating on the central heating system. I had the MiStat mp 710RK09SX unit installed direct to the boiler via a local plumber which took next to no time. A quick install is a cheap install. In use, the thermostat control itself is very intuitive to navigate and action your choices. The on-screen prompts are easy to read and adjust by means of a simple cursor and large + and – value buttons on the top of the unit. You can set the controls for holiday mode, night time control and of course daily temperature regulation which is all straight forward. One of my favourite observations about this system is that because the downstairs radiator is so responsive and heats up quickly, so does the rest of the house. As warm air rises, the main radiator for downstairs soon heats up that floor to the pre-set temperature, (accurate to within half a degree Centigrade), and then goes on to warm the bedrooms. The landing radiator is the control radiator to regulate the system which is also on upstairs as is the bathroom rad, but we don’t have the need to turn the bedroom radiators on because the heat is already so well circulated. Generally, downstairs is set to 20 or 21 degrees C and I have noticed that the thermostat is very responsive to adjusting quickly. Take note that the height of where you position it will obviously cause it to respond to the air temperature at that height in the room. Overall I recommend the unit very highly for its responsiveness, sensitivity and reliability in making a more energy efficient and consciously run home. Excellent product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Drayton mistat MP710 This is an excellent product I have had for about 6 weeks It was very easy to install and the programming is simple to follow I am confident with its versatile settings for when I am both at home or away on holiday will pay dividends in fuel bill savings.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Low product life expectancy! I have purchased three of these and two of the three failed after three years - As the third one is approaching three years of service I am expecting that one to fail also very soon. The two that have failed so far both failed with the same problem that after the batteries required replacement it was not possible to bind the thermostat/timer unit to its receiver. After numerous attempts at successfully initialising the binding process each attempt finally failed after a period of time with the message 'Binding Error'. No wireless communication was achievable between thermostat/timer and the receiver control unit and so it was not serviceable and the only option was to replace it. These units are not cheap and one might reasonably expect more than three years life from them. Since this has now happened twice I think I'll be trying a different make of wireless thermostat/timer at this time.
