How to guides

How to hang wallpaper

How to hang wallpaper

Wallpaper adds a stunning finish to the walls of any room, whether it’s a bold, colourful patterned wallpaper or a subtle, neutral wallpaper. With wallpaper comes the flexibility of wallpapering a whole room or an individual feature wall.

Our extensive range of wallpaper offers a variety of colours, patterns and textures. Choose from styles including floral, geometric, metallic, natural and vintage. Our buyer's guide helps you choose the perfect wallpaper for your room to create the look that you’ll love.

Read our Buyer's guide to wallpaper

In this guide we’ll walk you through how to:

  • Measure and cut wallpaper to the correct lengths
  • Apply adhesive to the wallpaper
  • Hang the lengths to achieve a straight and smooth finish, on walls and around corners and stairwells
  • Tackle awkward areas like radiators, windows, light switches, plug sockets and door frames
  • Hang wallpaper to create a feature wall

For this project we’ll be using paste the paper wallpaper, which needs to have adhesive applied to the back of it before hanging. The alternatives are paste the wall paper, which means that you apply the wallpaper adhesive to the wall instead of the paper, and self-adhesive wallpaper. For pasting the wall we recommend applying the adhesive with a roller.

Buying guides

Wallpapering tools buying guide

Wallpapering tools buying guide

Wallpapering can sometimes be a more complex task than you might imagine, but having all the right tools will make it far simpler and the result much neater.

Types of tools

Paste brush

You can use any 100mm or 125mm paintbrush to apply paste, but a paste brush has a thicker wedge of soft bristles, which makes it easier to use.

Paper-hanging scissors

These scissors have extra-long blades that make it easier to cut your wallpaper in straight lines.

Wallpaper table (pasting table)

Higher than a kitchen table and just wider than a roll of wallpaper, this lightweight folding platform is perfect for measuring, cutting and pasting paper. W-leg tables are more stable than cheaper versions, but plastic ones are the sturdiest of all - as well as being the simplest to clean and store.

Plumb line/chalk line

Want to make sure you hang your wallpaper straight? Use a plumb line (a weight on the end of a string) to get a perfectly straight vertical line. And if you need to draw a straight edge on most surfaces, snap a chalk line.

Wallpaper scorer

When you soak wallpaper to prepare it for stripping, score the surface first with a rotary scorer as it helps the water to penetrate. Then just use a scraper to lift the paper off the wall.

Paper-hanging brush

The soft bristles on this brush are designed to smooth wallpaper by squeezing out any air bubbles and excess paste. Wash the bristles in warm water when you've finished to keep it fresh and usable.

Wallpaper steamer

Steaming is the fastest way to strip wallpaper. It makes good sense to buy a steamer when you have a lot of paper to strip, or need to do the job quickly.

Seam roller

Smooth the seams between lengths of wallpaper with this tiny roller - but make sure not to use it on embossed or fragile papers.

Combination smoother/cutter

After you've smoothed your wallpaper in place, simply cut around any obstructions with the retractable snap-off blade. But don't press too hard on fragile papers, or they might tear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks lovely-happy happy happy!! We bought this for our living room and it looks lovely!! My boyfriend's father (who's 75) hung the wallpaper, and he had no issues with it. I'm really pleased with it and it makes such a difference to our living room. We picked this because of the pattern and neutral colours; I'm glad we didn't listen to the negative reviews. We used 3 rolls, which cost £18 each. We have magnolia painted walls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Stunning This paper was more than i wanted to pay for our hall, stairs & landing but i have to say it was worth every penny, it looks incredible up. Our decorator said it was lovely to hang. We have only used it on two feature walls with the rest painted Antique White Silk and white ceilings. It looks very rich and definately makes a lovely statement and feature wall. One word of caution is do be careful with the gold stripe as it can mark / scratch very easily so i would NOT recommend it to be used if you have young children running round the house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely wallcovering Just bought this paper for my living room and dining room, go the decorator to hang it horizontally and it looks amazing, overall very happy with my purchase, good quality paper and has a lovely sheen to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Take care but it's worth it I bought this paper approx July 2014 and used it on a feature wall in the living room. I like it and I'm pleased with the outcome. I think it adds some texture to my neutral colour scheme. Negatives - This paper is delicate and requires some patience to hang. I would recommend that your walls are clean and smooth before applying because the bumps and air bubbles do show through, due to the paper being quite thin and the metallic colour in one of the stripes. I would also recommend that you get a professional to hang it if you're not confident to do it yourself. Mine was hung by my dad with help from me (neither of us experts) and with a bit of care and patience it didn't cause us too many issues.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I will agree with the previous reviewer who said that this wallpaper looks stunning on the walls, however it was very difficult to work with and would tear very easily and also it marks very very easily especially on the metallic strip. I would not recommend it for a high traffic area, only use it for a feature wall and not in the hall, stairs and landing like I have done, I have a feeling that I will be having to change it much sooner than the usual 2 years.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from High price poor result Considering the price I was very disappointed with the finish from the bronze strip and it creases and rips very easily! Had to made the best out of a bad situation!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Poor Quality I bought this paper for my hall. I loved the pattern, it was exactly what I had been looking for with the metal strip setting it apart from the others I had been looking at. The problems began when I applied the paste. I followed exactly as advised on the label and left for at least 5mins. before hanging. The paper is not very thick and once paste is applied it seamed even thinner. It rips very, very easily the metal strip marks and in places actually came off. to say I was disappointed is an understatement. I would like to add I have been wallpapering for several years and never had paper do this before. It went back to B & Q.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from AVOID!!!!!!! My husband and I have just had a wasted DAY trying to get this paper to work on a small chimney breast. It's the absolute worst paper we've both ever hung (in 30+ yrs). If you crease/fold it you can't use it because it marks (especially the metallic stripe), if you try to wipe out the air / paste bubbles it marks; just an absolute nightmare. We've wasted one roll trying to get it to work and as much as we wanted 'the look' we hate it now - it's just not worth the hassle and effort. AVOID this paper unless you fancy a wasted day and possibly an argument with your better half (it's that frustrating!!). B&Q need to get their quality control sorted - this is all going back; pasted and all!
