How to insulate your loft

How to insulate your loft

Insulating your loft can seem like an unappealing job, but saving money on your utility bills always sounds good. If your home’s without loft insulation, you could be losing up to a quarter of your home’s heat through your roof*. This makes insulating your loft one of the most effective ways to reduce heating bills and be more energy-efficient. And even if you already have some existing insulation, it’s key to have the optimum amount for it to be truly effective.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to lay loft floor insulation. Also known as ‘cold roof’ insulation, insulation is fitted to the floor of the loft trapping the heat in the main part of the house and away from the loft. This is ideal if you don’t use your loft at all, or only for the storage of non-perishable items.

The alternative is ceiling, or ‘warm roof’ insulation. This is fitted above the rafters and keeps the heat in the loft. It uses different types of insulation to loft floor and is used in loft conversions to make the space into a habitable living area. This isn’t explored in this article.

Our guide includes step-by-step advice on how to:

  • Work out how much existing loft floor insulation you already have
  • Confirm how much new insulation you need
  • Lay, and cut, two different types of loft floor insulation – rolls of insulation and insulated loft floor boards
  • Lay loft floor insulation around cables and recessed downlights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Down light insulation guard This galvanised metal guard comes as a flat pack , but is easy to assemble

Rated 4 out of 5 by from does a good job the guards are easy to assemble and fit although they do stand proud of the 100mm joist and the insulation has to be rolled over the guard with a 40mm lift that can be plugged to avoid breaks in insulation blanket. There is plenty space in the guard to include the light transformer rather that have it on the joist and buried in the insulation. Would have been 5 star but lost out due to fairly high cost per item - given that most people will need a minimum of 4 per room, and 12 if downlighters used extensively (bathrooms etc). A discount on quantity would be nice.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Halolite Downlight guards The guards are made out of sturdy metal and arrive flat packed. Construction into a box simply takes seconds as the sides click together. The issue I had with these covers is that their height protrudes above the joists. If you do not intend to board up your loft then not a problem. The good thing is that the covers allow you to cover them with insulation as the holes on the side present themselves above the joist allowing ventilation
