bought this to cover fire escape stairs and veranda, and whilst it says can be applied direct to rust, i decided that due to the fact we live near the sea and the weather we get, that we should use the hammerite red oxide primer first, to give better protection. we wire brushed and sanded first to give a sound footing but i found that it does not cover the red primer with one coat, and will need two coats. it says on the tin that one coat should be sufficient to cover sound paintwork but its not true and is very streaky.

Easy to use. Quick drying. Cuts down the need for priming.

Used on external cast iron drainage pipes on listed building. Good value, good coverage and great results. Used in conjunction with power putty to bridge cracks first.

I had an occasion to remove my 28 year old caravan axle. Whilst it was off I used Hammerite Smooth to protect it. Without preparation I painted over the rust as recommend, coverage was very good. I did give it a second coat whilst I had the opportunity. Very pleased with the result.
I live 14 miles from my local store so used the reserve and collect service. Everything worked well.
