Appalling Quality Surface Splinters and Cracks
TerryK - 3 days ago
I bought an 8'x4' sheet of this. Described as 'hardwood@'.Surface layer is micro thin and several times with careful sawing and drilling it came away in ugly splintered layers. I used B&Q 9mm in 2019 and was impressed but this is useless. Have scrapped the start I made on some cupboards and bought a sheet elsewhere. 50% more expensive but at least it will produce a decent job.
ITS POT LUCK

I bought a number of these sheets knowing that there was a good chance that they might be bowed or delaminating. As the delivery guy opened up the van (he and the lady co driver were excellent) the sheets looked very true - first hurdle. I’ve cut some and the cut edges have been very good - no splintering. Okay, not best birch ply quality, but not the same price. The reality is that, with B&Q and all sheds, it’s pot luck. They buy lots, price is key, quality is variable and you take your chance. If you want consistency, pay the price and go to a specialist. If you are in a position where you can reject sheets, then try your luck.

This sheet looks great on the shelves in b&q but once you cut into it there are quality issues with the inner ply and or gluing process. Okay for sheathing walls etc but not so good for making boxes or cabinets. I ended up gluing the ply back together.
