Fire Maintenance & Fuel

Coal is still used by many homes in real fires. It is a fossil fuel and burning coal releases carbon dioxide that has been locked up over thousands of years as well as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulates associated with air pollution. There are many alternatives to 100% coal fuels available where coal is blended with renewable materials. As well as reducing the amount of fossil fuel being burned, these can be more efficient than 100% coal products.  Alternatively, consider switching to responsibly sourced wood based fuel. Take a look at our article on smoke control zones in the U.K and how you can burn fuels responsibly. For some stoves, you may need a solid fuel kit to be able to burn this type of fuel so check the instructions.
