How to understand building & planning regulations

How to understand building & planning regulations

What are planning and building controls? Why do they exist? Can you deal with them yourself or is it best to ask a specialist? As with any task, you can decide for yourself when you know exactly what's involved.

First of all, it's important to understand what planning and building regulations are. It's easy to think of them as restrictive, bureaucratic tools put in place purely to thwart your ambitions. However, they're essential safety mechanisms which have been designed to protect you, your neighbours and the local environment.

The regulatory bodies will give you permission to carry out your plans unless there are very good reasons not to - in which case they must explain their decision. And if you disagree, you have the right to appeal against it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy peasy Only thing with them is you have to have a good grip hold to use them. Cuts like butter with a knife

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bolt cutters I bought this item to cut some bolts. It did the trick. Fair enough I had to use some brute strength. I honestly didn,t think they were tough enough to do the job that I bought them for. But they did. I am well pleased that I bought this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Reasonably Good Value I bought a pair of these bolt cutters a few months ago when a small padlock seized up on an outside shed. It cut through the shank with no trouble at all. Quite impressed. However, a friend of mine borrowed them to cut off a larger padlock with a 'hardened steel' shank and although they managed to cut off the lock, it took two attempts and the jaws of my bolt cutters are badly damaged. There are two deep dents in the jaws and are now useless. These bolt cutters are fine as long as you stick to mild steel and not hardened steel! I have bought a bigger and better pair of Cr-Mo bolt cutters now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Feeble No impact at all on a padlock, which left this cutter with notches in the jaws. Would only be useful for cutting wire, for example, it appears.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No instructions for Mac Allister Bolt Cutter Purchased from B & Q Scarborough -- no instructions, no logical way of using the tool - not a happy bunny. Tried to access instructions via WWW - not successful.
