Upon preparing to fix the handrail to the wall we noticed that the end of the rail was damaged. Also, the handrail itself was bowed so we were unable to even fix it to the wall so still need to purchase another. Possibly cheap for a reason, would not buy again.

Occasionally a problem arises that looks like big trouble, our new home suffered from a staircase with no banister needing an immediate solution. A B&Q gift card invited me to look at what was on offer and this banister was ordered and delivered to my door for a fiver!

Just 45 mins work has made the stairs a pleasure to use, with the finish commended by a local builder.

Did the Job - could be stronger

I bought this last week and have just fitted it. Was available ex stock in Edinburgh and I needed something quick.

Was bought to provide a rail on both sides of the staircase by matching an existing handrail. It is not as thick as the original. I would happily put all my weight on the existing rail but would be a bit nervous about doing that with the new item. The catalog should include a dimensioned diagram of the profile. It is not clear what the quoted size actually means.(Other suppliers are also guilty of this)

Too long to fit in car so I cut it so that the longest piece just fitted and then re-joined the two sections on the wall. Don't do this if you can avoid it but it seems to have worked OK with care and extra effort.(and a bit of luck with the two ends meeting on a stud.)

Hardest part of the job was locating the studs on the timber partition wall and working out where to drill the rail to match. This was confusing because the upstairs floor is behind the wall halfway up the flight. Got there eventually with a stud detector. I used 3" No.12 screws (two per stud) which I an confident will stay put - though I am not so sure about the strength of the handrail wood itself. The holes in the rail are best drilled from the back in order to get them at right angles to the wall. I then used a countersink bit - first sideways and then in line with the hole - to make a recess for the screw head on the sloping face of the rail.

Fine for what i needed

Arrived in good time and was advised of delivery. Luckily I didn't need the full length as there was a bit of a kink at one end

Nice bit of wood!

Fitted to wall a few days ago and really happy with the end result. It comes unfinished so I stained with a dark oak wax and looks really good. The wood was straight too.
