How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Use a paddle and drill to mix... I purchased this product before and can confirm the commonly cited complaints i.e. peeling and a rippled surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Buy bought this recently and found it very easy to apply. it covered the blemishes well ready to apply the top coat

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Star product It covered dark emulsion tester blocks and also helped mask very uneven walls after wallpaper had damaged the plaster - would definitely buy again

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does exactly what it says on the tin Used this on my hallway which I didn't want to completely re plaster. I did a lot of preparation (filling/rubbing down) and then used the base coat for those small annoying imperfections ...hall was ready to paint...brilliant

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Coverage Scraped polystyrene tiles off the ceiling, sanded down and covered with this product, it took 3 coats but saved us having to renew the ceiling. Big thumbs up

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super coverage Used this to cover a very dark emulsion and it did the job very well. Its a thick mixture and applied better with a roller than a brush, I put a light dulux colour over it afterwards and the result is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Polycell 3in 1 Basecoat I have used this product before and was delighted with it. It does just what it does on the can. It covers cracks, blocks stains and obliterates strong colours. I needed to cover up previous damp stains, small cracks in an Artex ceiling and cover quite a strong colour without the expense of several coats of paint and the labour involved. One coat of this product and one coat of Matt Emulsion on walls and ceilings...perfect finish. I have since moved and am about to start decorating again, so going by my previous experience. Polycell 3in 1 Basecoat was my must have purchase

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covers knackered walls easily I've used this paint over and over again. It does need to be slopped on thickly and will, therefore, be slightly rippled, but combined with a decent matt emulsion over the top gives a lovely finish. I tend to use two coats (usually loading a small emulsion roller straight from the pot!) as this is generally enough to flatten out divers and cracks after sanding. As other reviews have noted, it goes on a bit like PVA glue so is not great for fiddly jobs where you're worried about losing detail on architrave and the like. I would never use another base coat, unless it was a perfectly flat, replastered wall. It also does wonders for covering up any slightly rough joins after caulking and, if rolled on with a gloss roller, gives a nice base coat for woodwork (and is much, much better value than the expensive primers sold for using with chalk paint)
