Makes a Large Hamster Cage - 709.5 square inches
RebzPetz - 22 days ago
Finally a large enough UK bin for creating a affordable large hamster cage! Hamsters should have a minimum of 620 Square inches of floor space (unbroken e.g. in one cage, not lots of little ones attached together). I have cut out the lid to create to sections of ventilation (using a Dremel with saw blade) and attached 0.5-0.6mm mesh using cable ties with drilled holes. The mesh was cut using scissors. I am very happy with these 134xl tubs!. Although there are plastic wheel arcs at one end, the plastic looks nice a thick, so hopefully is harder to chew through, luckily my guys aren't chewers, so I don't foresee a problem.
Internal dimensions are 43” x 16.5” giving 709.5 square inches of floor space at the smallest taper point at the base. The raised lid takes the cage up too about 11.5”. The 33cm Trixie plastic wheel only JUST fits with no bedding under it.
Also please note you should have more hides and at least 8" of suitable substrate (not softwood sawdust, only aspen wood is ok for small animals). However I'm currently using these as hospital cages and need to limit the stuff in there whilst they are all treated!
