How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good colour This varnish is great. It enriches the colour on skirting & conservatory windowsills. Works really well & you can easily put a new coat on every so often to enrich colour & finish. I would highly recommend.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Avoid! I was a woodwork teacher for 35 years and have worked in wood since retiring 10 years ago making fine marquetry boxes and small hardwood furniture. I have always used spirit based varnish and shellac sanding sealer for many of my woodwork projects for its durability and the way it enhances the grain. This product does none of these things and is simply not fit for purpose. It has left black spots in the wood on many of my oak projects and I have had to strip them back and refinish them. It dries too quickly and often leaves brush marks so cannot be worked into corners and crevices. If you do it will foam up and produce bubbles which stay on the surface. The final finish is certainly not `Diamond Hard`! It does produce a very neutral/natural finish which to some may be a good feature but it does nothing to really enhance the grain and beauty of the wood. Yes it is quick drying and you can wash your brushes in water with little odour. However if the final finish is poor then I`ll be staying with spirit based varnish. This product needs more development and is simply sold on convenience and environmental factors.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hopeless With 40-odd years as a joiner, I was specifically requested to use this on a small bespoke oak bookcase. Never ever again will I use any water based finish. It is very very thin and even using a soft brush, on application, the stuff foams-up, which if left to dry leaves white/opaque deposits on edges/in corners etc. The ability to apply a fresh coat every hour is not an advantage when this rapid drying means that the brush strokes simply do not disappear and you will be left with a very streaky finish. Depending on how the light falls, you will be either disappointed or incredibly angry. Do not use fine sandpaper to finish the last (3rd) coat as Ronal recommend, but use an age old French Polisher's method of carefully applied fine steel wool and then finish with a good quality furniture wax. This will flatten some of the brush stroke marks. This stuff is a derivative of that used in finishing commercial furniture where speed is crucial and in that application, it is sprayed on. As said elsewhere, best use solvent based varnish and take the extra couple of hours to get a superlative result.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from You need to be a quick painter This water based varnish dries too quickly, resulting in drag marks and an uneven finish. Do not use it unless you are a very quick painter!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor finish I bought this product for my internal doors, applied 2 coats and the finish was very poor due to drag marks. Water based varnishes dry too quickly, if you want a good finish stick to solvent based varnishes. I will now have to buy a different product and start again. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone.
