Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OMG what a winner I never write a review but must in this case. when I first used this paint went on too easy, looked like an undercoat.I thought this is dreadful, bought because there was no need to do a separate undercoat.Oh well 2nd coat tomorrow disheartened to start again, to my amazement woke the next day to gleaming white perfectly painted wood unbelievable and no need for a 2nd coat. The best paint I have ever used for easiness and for excellent whiteness I would highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Horses for Courses I bought 4 packs of pine for skirting boards and architrave.I used Knotting compound to stop the sap from soaking through the paint. This is where i found that i needed 4 coats of this paint to cover the Knotting compound as it showed up as a dark patch. However i painted the old curtain rail after lightly sanding it, and this paint went on great, maybe because the old undercoat was oil based. So next time i will give the bare wood a coat of oil based undercoat and see if this will cover the Knotting compound,so i wont have to repaint so many times. This paint did cover the bare wood with ease and a light sanding between each coat saw me paint the whole room in 10 mins. The problem was the knotting compound, not the paint. Also if using 2 pack wood filler this paint seems to float about on the surface on the first coat but was ok after the second coat.Maybe an undercoat would help here aswell [kind of defeats the point of a one coat paint-but it wont go Green after 5 months like the last oil based paint i used. Also i used a synthetic brush which feels as though the end result was going to be naff but it came out great in the end. A very good, easy to apply paint,2nd ,3rd,4th coats went on very fast, and for me, i got a better finish with this paint than with any other paint i have used.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 10yr stay white? About 2 1/2 yrs ago I painted the whole house, I used a professional trade paint from a trade store. This paint has gone so yellow it looks magnolia. This ronseal paint promises 10yrs white? The other reviewers are correct it's very thin so ensure the base paint is well keyed, you will also need a very fine bristle brush and pile on the paint, remember it's thin so watch fo runs. It's very disheartening to paint and know another coat is needed, I've done 3 coats and used one 2.5 plus most of a 750ml to do a 3 bed semi hallway. Honestly it really needs to be left to harden flatted and painted again but I just can't be bothered. Plus sides the colour very bright white, there is almost no smell and it's easy to clean up. Now if the effort gets you 10yrs would that be worth It? Probably, and it would get more stars!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from vey poor results I have painted 5 doors (both sides) and the result is very disappointing. I painted with3 coats of paint following Ronseal,s instructions, rubbing down and wiping with white spirit before painting but the doors don,t look at all as I would expect. Just glad I have,t painted the other 5 doors yet !
