Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't understand why poor reviews!! Bought this paint after having a terrible time with the dulux satin wood and crown version drying tacky, peeling off and getting extra grubby on my banisters. After a light sanding and two coats of this paint, it applied and dried beautifully.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does exactly what it says on the tin. Stays white. Don't you just t when you move an object from your window sill, & you are left with a yellowish "shadow" where it used to be? Pluses: smells different to standard gloss/satin paint, but dissipates quicker and not so overpowering. Dries quicker too. Minuses: even on pre-primed doors/skirting etc. for best results, minimum 3 coats required.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice to use. Good Coverage I bought a tin of this and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to use. I have previously had issues with water based paint but this is really good. I have been applying it using a flattened 1 inch wide brush (like an artists brush) for a flat brushless finish, so I have no idea how it performs using standard paint brushes. I find it suitable for small project work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent paint for wood! Surprised at other reviews. Over lightly rubbed down white gloss woodwork gave superb coverage and adhesion. Using a decent brush it flowed superbly leaving no brush marks and dried in 20 minutes. Didn't need the recommended second coat and left a decent flattish silk finish. Brush cleaned easily as well. Better than any other water based wood paint I have tried.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bad coverage 1st tin was good then got another and coverage was poor. Like it was watered down. Complained to ronseal and they sent me a tin. Think since the 1st tin they have changed the formula. I still use as everywhere is done now since and just use to cover up marks etc.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from bad choice After seeing this paint I thought let's give it a try. even the skirting and door frames looked awful after 3 coats I thought what a waste of money done kitchen door left it with roller marks ..another coat even worse should really have taken it back but I thought they would say I had not prepared area or sanded wood. I did every thing as I should so it was the quality of the paint After reading reviews... well an expensive misake I would not even give it 1 star Back to buy dulux more money more time ..... why did I not read the review first

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubish Bought this to paint a dolls cot. Cot was sanded down before painting and as this paint was supposed to be a primer as well thought it would be good. After 4 coats it still didn't cover, ended up having to use spray paint.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrendous!!! This paint is by far the worst paint product i have had the misfortune to buy.Extremly poor coverage two coats still patchy and streaky despite trying brush and roller to apply .This paint dries with runs all over, time to get sander on job and start again .RUBBISH!!!!! No stars here.
