Interior paint buying guide

Interior paint buying guide

For a simple way to update a room, you can’t beat a lick of paint. Whether you’re putting your stamp on your new home, or are renovating a room that needs some TLC, interior paint can transform any space in the house in a few hours.

There are lots of paints available for different surfaces and it can be a bit daunting if you aren’t sure what all the different types, finishes and features mean. We are going to talk you through the ins and outs of interior paint so that you can buy the right paint with confidence.

Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant for over chalk paint Wasn't sure about using this after reading the bad reviews, as I had already bought it decided to give it a go.done a bit of research and this is what I done.first coat I dilated it with 10%water and used a sponge to apply it, left for 24 hours then applied 2 coats not diluted with sponge it turned out fantastic no patches. I will say I turned laquer tin upside down a few hours before opening, when applying first coat went width of table, second coat went across table .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy application Used this instead of the wax. Gives a lovely matt finish over the chalk paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has worked perfectly with Rustoleum Chalk Paint Despite some bad reviews I have to say that I've had no problem with this product. It has definitely been the finishing touch to chalk painted furniture for me and the items feel so much more robust - I like the slightly sheen look too. You can wipe clean the surface. I have just bought some more and will happily continue to use it. Yes it does slightly darken the colour but in a good way - makes it look much richer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like a dream I've just used a tin of this and am off to buy another! I found it went on beautifully with a roller and with a brush. It dried evenly and I don't believe it affected the colour. I painted over chalk paint and over emulsion both have turned out really well!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not what I'd hoped for I was looking for an inexpensive indoor matt varnish to protect several previously painted (B&Q Forest Colours matt) MDF boards which we now use as blackout at our little community cinema. Staff at B&Q are always helpful and knowledgeable, so I was advised to buy this lacquer. I do SO wish varnish was sticky and aromatic (!) as in the good old toxic days, instead of this weird milky stuff. Never mind, it was easily applied, temporarily filling our large room with the aroma of smelly feet, but a few days later when handling the boards they continued to scuff. Well, it's maybe not Rust-Oleum's or B&Q's fault - perhaps I was searching for the moon then finding it was just a reflection in a puddle. Attractive tin, though. Better luck next time?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Did the job Having read many negative reviews, I was dubious about using this to seal the paint on my kitchen cupboard doors. However I applied it in 2 thin coats, it did darken the paint colour slightly and the finish looks more weathered than the unsealed paint, both of which I feel adds to the overall look so I'm not worried. Much less elbow grease than waxing and only time will tell if it is more durable, but based on this application I would use it again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from uneven on big surfaces Used this after painting with rust-oleum matt furniture paint. Finish with a good brush was disappointing, even though I've got painting experience over several decades. When it dried out the finish was uneven, that is not universally matt, but slightly satin here and matt there. It also tended to dry, such that working an edge spoilt the finish. This was impossible to avoid when painting a large headboard. In the end I bought some water-based varnish which was so much easier to put on and gave a much better finish. It was also cheaper and dried much more quickly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't do it! Painstakingly painted a small wardrobe in their Anthracite grey chalk paint, looked great, but wanted a more hard-wearing finish. Painted this over the top as it says it's recommended for their chalk paint and it has ruined the whole thing. Dries really patchy - matt in places/shiny on others. Has changed the colour of the chalk paint too - much much darker now. Looks like it's still drying but has been a week and is perfectly dry. Awful product.
