Grass trimmer & brushcutter buying guide

Grass trimmer & brushcutter buying guide

Add a finishing touch to your lawn by cutting long grass and trimming the edges with a grass trimmer or a brushcutter.

Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, grass trimmers are great for accessing areas that your lawnmower can’t reach. They’re also ideal for tidying around fragile areas of the garden such as around plants, trees or the borders of your lawn. A brushcutter is a heavier weight and more powerful machine, suitable for clearing overgrown grass, weeds, brambles and small hedges.

There are a number of types and models available and choosing one can be difficult. So let's breakdown the options for buying a new or replacement grass trimmer or brushcutter.

Before you begin

When choosing a grass trimmer or brushcutter, ask yourself the following questions to help decide on the best option for you.

What will you be cutting?

Firstly, think about what type of grass you'll be cutting most often. Will it be a grass lawn, or coarser, more overgrown vegetation? For trimming short to medium-length grass, tidying edges and reaching places where the lawnmower can’t, a grass trimmer is the best option. For long and overgrown grass, weeds and small trees, consider a brushcutter. Or if you're not sure what you'll be cutting, or are likely to have both grass and brush to cut, look out for machines that are both grass trimmers and brushcutters.

Knowing what you’ll be cutting will also determine how powerful you need your grass trimmer or brushcutter to be.

How big is your garden?

If you have a large garden or patch of land, or plan to trim far away from your house, consider an option that doesn’t have to be plugged into the mains, giving greater freedom of use and movement. Similarly, a lightweight option will help you stay comfortable for the duration of the task.

Also, consider how densely packed with plants your outdoor space is. For example, if you need to work around a lot of flowers, bushes or trees, a trimmer with a smaller head will allow you to do this without damaging them as easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No battery, light, easy to start and use I have used 2 trimmers in my life and this latest version by Ryobi RLT26HT is the most easy of all to use. No need to wait for the battery to charge. The petrol operated trimmer starts with out any effort. Light weight, I was able to finish the garden with out feeling exhausted. The design is the best so far but does not come with a strap. I used the old trimmers strap. The manufacture should still include one for safety, but obviously they did not worry about this which left me a little concerned.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for a weak heart This is a pig to start, I followed the instructions, correct fuel mix etc and am a fit bloke but it certainly isn't a quick start or easy start... I was on the verge of taking it back for that reason, I will give it a day to bed in and to be honest if it gives me the same grief tomorrow I will. 2 stars because when it starts it does what it is meant to do.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money Had 2 of these. Engine seized on both in less than 1year. Engine is not strong enough.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't bother Had two of these now, both engine units failed shortly after the 1yr warranty expired. My local garden equipment servicing centre has banned Ryobi from their premises, won't even look at trying to fix them as they've had too many that they've fixed come straight back. Basically you get what you pay for and whilst £200 is a lot of money, it isn't for this sort of kit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Heavy, very noisy and incredibly underpowered. I bought this to replace my long reach flymo battery powered hedge trimmer. I have a large privet hedge that I've cut twice a year for the last 7 years. I was hoping This was more powerful and would make it easier. It is very heavy and hard to manoeuvre. It is incredibly noisy. It is also extremely under powered. I would recommend an electric long reach but this was a real waste of time.
