These worked great as we made contemporary shelving out of them. they sanded down and took the stain well. As they are for supporting heavy objects they worked well.

I bought a few in store, I had to rummage through the shelves to find acceptable ones though, as most had bad splits in them, weak with big knots or the steel bands weren't nailed on squarely (sitting above the board surface as a trip hazard and easy to cut yourself on) the timber is cheap softwood , fast grown so isn't the best - they were reasonably straight and flat though. I was using them for platforms and ramps so they needed to be strong enough for walking on. I wouldn't recommend buying these without picking your own in store.
