In another review they mentioned that they snap, well mine didn't, but you do need a 6 mm hole to fit the screw in to the oak banister and its best to make the deep and clean. It does take patience to fix the nut to the screw, the thread could be a bit longer.

Cheap quality steel failed at the hindge

I've just snapped the hinge section leaving half in the oak handrail. This system may work on a softer wood. Or maybe 7 mm hole for hard wood like oak wouldining make it possible. ( I've not tried so I don't know) But the instructions say
6.5mm. It doesn't need much Forse to snap
the fixing either. If you must use this fixing system go very gently. I used olive oil on the threads and wound it out several times to clean the threads before taping into the rail furather.

I am asking for hand rails for stairs, and what I get is only fixings, you should try this and if you get handrails you will be lucky.I think the web cite should show you what someone is asking.
