Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to apply I bought this paint because the Valspar emulsion was so good. I used the primer/undercoat first on previously glossed wood. I thought something was wrong with it because it was almost colourless although it was so easy to apply because it was so thin and I couldn't really see where I had painted. I checked on line and saw the previous bad reviews but I decided to carry on and apply the gloss. It was also thin & very easy to apply. I was surprised with the results. After 2 coats of gloss it looks great. It easily covered the previous yellowing paint and took me no time at all because it dries so quickly. I have used all makes of paint & I now rate this as top & will use again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product Brilliant product! Primed and under coated (Valspar) and the results were great. I had oil based on before so it obviously wouldn't have covered. Like anything as long as the prep is done properly then the results are good as they should be :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Valspar Brilliant White Paint This is the second tin we have purchased. Chosen because it is water soluble making brushes much easier to clean. The paint dries quickly, but not too quickly allowing time to get a good finish. Would recommend this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quick drying Nice paint to apply, not as 'Glossy' as I would have expected from Valspar.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Valspar internal pure brilliant white gloss. A bit thin ,not very glossy and peels off easily when dry.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has a lovely white shine but chips easily I glossed my sons room a month ago with this gloss- I sanded area down as required but need to do 3 coats to cover the yellow skirting. At first I wasn't happy with it taking 3 coats but once the third coat had dried it is a lovely bright white that I wanted...however the first time I hoover the room and knocked the skirting a lot of the white gloss chipped off and pulled all 3 layers of gloss off. A month later, no more has chipped but I am taking extra care not to knock into the skirting- it is still a lovely white colour and looks clean. Would I use again?...I really don't think know- I love the white colour, it has a much brighter sheen than other gloss I've used but I really don't like that it may chip easily. I would probably use again in a low traffic area.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Definitely not glossy! I asked a member of staff from the paint dept, for a reasonably priced white gloss. This is the product that I was recommended. £16 a litre didn’t seem reasonably priced but then I haven’t purchased paint recently. After applying a first coat to B&Q’s pre primed MDF skirting (which I laid flat to stop runs) I could see brush marks and very little gloss. It was easy to apply so after a few hours I put a second coat on trying to load the brush with more paint. The results were same as the first coat, very little gloss and brush marks. Very disappointing.! Looked on their sister website and found a well recommended product, Leyland Trade High Gloss Brilliant White 750m at £8.99 which is fantastic. Re-done skirting boards and also large radiator and now wishing I had used the Leyland first!! Maybe it’s to do with the Valspar paint being water based??
