Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great White This is the first time I have used Valspar Brilliant white matt, now I can say I have used a number of companies Paints and are all the same as this paint in covering dark paint under, this paint took 3 coats and all paint are the same. I am very happy with the out come, but time will tell how long it will last on the walls, ceiling will be ok.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful paint We purchased some Valspar paint in a colour we had mixed in store - Mind your Beeswax. Great colour but appalling quality. Usually a cursory stir upon opening means paint is mixed easily. I stirred this for ages and I struggled to incorporate the deep watery layer on top - it was still really runny. I poured some into the tray and tried painting - it was like using poster paint and barely covered. It thickened up a bit as time went on but coverage was patchy and terrible - was covering over white base coat. Had to repaint one section straightaway. Managed to get second coat on but am not very happy with the coverage. Would never use again - avoid like the plague. Assumed with being the most expensive paint I have purchased it would be the best quality I had used but was so wrong! I would stick to Crown, Dulux or B+Q own brand over this!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from waste of money was convinced by a staff member to buy 12L of valspar white and was assured that it would go over two existing coats of Crown trade white.. three coats later and its still patchy in natural lighting, awful coverage. total waste of money. will be going to another store to buy another brand of paint asap.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money Immediately able to tell that it was not going to be any good.... 2 coats in and still poor (awful) coverage... we have given up and gone back to buy a different brand. Waste of money and valuable time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubbish Paint This is far too thin. after 12 litres used in only one bedroom, I then had to search out more paint of a different brand that would provide the required cover for the colours I was covering up. It might be OK if all you are doing is adding a fresh coat over a white base, otherwise don't waste your money.
