This can be tricky when caring for your outdoor plants in hot weather, especially when temporary use bans (aka hosepipe bans) are introduced.

That's where we can help. We’ll talk you through our top ways to use water as efficiently as possible in your garden. From recycling leftover water from your domestic chores to collecting and harvesting rainwater, we'll show you how to make sure none is wasted.

Are your plants in need of a good watering? Keeping your flowers and lawn well-watered is the key to a healthy and flourishing garden. With so many watering and irrigation options out there it can be hard to choose which is best. Or maybe you need a tool to supply or collect water for cleaning your car or filling your paddling pool? From watering cans to hoses, sprayers to sprinklers, we’re here to help you find your ideal watering tool.

Before you begin

When choosing tools and equipment for watering in your garden, first consider the following things, to help you decide on the most appropriate for your needs.

What are you using the watering tool for?

Looking for a tool to water your plants? Different plants thrive under different conditions so the best way to water a plant will vary depending on how and where it is planted. You won't want to turn a full-powered hose onto young seedlings, but a small watering can isn't going to be a lot of use if you have a lawn or several large flowerbeds that need watering.

If you are looking to use the watering tool for filling a paddling pool or entertaining the kids in the garden on a hot day, consider a hose pipe and maybe even a sprinkler attachment.

For cleaning the patio or car you could use a hose, but for more power opt for a pressure washer. Find out more about pressure washers in our buying guide.

How big is the task?

You may need different watering tools depending on the size of the watering task. For example, if it’s just a few houseplants or pots that need watering you’ll only need a small capacity watering can or sprayer. But, if you have a lot of plants, or a large area of lawn to water, investigate more specialist watering tools that deliver a high volume of water in a way that suits the task.

How big is the space?

Consider the size of your garden or outdoor space and how you will transport your watering tool around it to reach all the plants or objects that need water. For example, for a small garden or balcony you might only need a small watering can or short hose. For a larger space you’ll need to look at longer hoses and sprinklers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent We have now bought 4 of these water butts. They blend in with our garden. They are strong and the stands are sturdy. Very happy with our purchases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product Wanted a slimline water butt to stand on decking. Does just the job. Easy to instal and use. And it rained the next day! Result then.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice butt!!!! we only set our butt up at the weekend so its not had any use yet but it was easy to set up and fit and must have only taken about 10 mins max. It looks good and is a bit different from the ugly green ones. So far I am very happy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Water Butt Dark Oak Effect 110Litres As I am very short on space particularly depth, it has solved the problem with a very neat design and has all the equipment for setting it up - as all the holes had been pre drilled it was easy to fit into the drainpipe and fit the tap. May buy another to link into this one but will require an additional fitting into the side of the butt. I am really pleased with the design and look of this Water Butt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from my but decorative as well as useful as this water but was going to be in full view at the front of our property, wanted something that was not too in your face! this fulfilled this objective as well as its primary function of providing water for my front borders without having to carry a can through the house

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Water Butt Only 4 stars as the lid collects water, needs turning the other way. Nice looking, good strong stand and does not wobble but best on a hard standing service. Not had through the winter yet but so far no problems.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than hoped Nice looking (def brown, not oak though), slim and blends in. It says on it 'drain it in extended cold weather' but I didn't do that and neither one has split so pleased. Also very easy to pop the lid off and dunk a watering can inside rather than wait for the tap. Only gripe is the lid which gathers leaves and rainwater which then becomes stagnant. Would be better if it was curved.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product This item is ideal if you have a restricted space for the water butt. It is also easy on the eye as it isn't the standard "green" colour. My only gripe would be that the rain diverter only fits 65mm downpipes. As I want to fit this to a log cabin that has a 50mm down pipe, I have had to buy this elsewhere. B & Q don't have one. Anyone want a 65mm rain diverter?
