Did you know that your natural stone paving slabs may have been imported from quarries in India and China?
In 2007, B&Q decided to address ethical and environmental concerns about how natural stone was quarried, processed and traded. In India, reports highlighted issues with child labour, unsafe working conditions as well as the environmental impacts of quarrying.
Following audits of the quarries our paving was being quarried from, we worked with Earthworm on a multi-stakeholder initiative, the Responsible Stone Program.
B&Q now requires that all its suppliers of natural stone products sign up to this initiative. Once a company has joined, it is required to apply basic standards for working conditions and environmental standards – and to commit to achieving higher standards within a set time frame.
