The B&Q ‘One Planet Living’ Awards support our progressive new partnership with sustainability experts BioRegional which aims to help us reduce our ecological footprint and to help us help our customers do the same.
The B&Q awards are launched every January and offer between £1,000 and £10,000 of B&Q products to organisations across the UK and Ireland which are working on projects that aim to enhance the local community or help us to return to ‘One Planet Living.’
In addition, B&Q also offers two awards of £5,000 combined cash/product to schools which submit innovative science-based proposals, showing a real understanding about the environment and the importance of tackling climate change
The 2008 award winners have now been announced: 20 projects will each receive B&Q materials to help transform their facilities. The school science award winners will be announced shortly.
One Planet Living is based on the premise that if we continue to live as we do in the UK, we will need three planets to maintain our way of life and, of course, we only have one. We have to lower our impact on the planet and our use of its natural resources.
Each year awards of up to £10,000 of B&Q products are up for grabs for community-based projects which can demonstrate that their project falls into one of the following categories:
• The environment/energy saving: projects which will help contribute to the health of the planet through the reduction of energy use or an active effort to limit their environmental footprint.
• Natural habitats and wildlife: projects which will support, protect and celebrate the natural habitats in local communities including community gardens, meadows, wetlands, chalk rivers and forests.
• Local culture/heritage: projects which will support, enhance and celebrate valuable aspects of local culture and heritage including its roots and traditions, local buildings, local building techniques, local produce and local arts and crafts.
