How to use a pressure washer

How to use a pressure washer

A pressure washer can take the hard work out of a whole host of cleaning tasks by simply blasting out a jet of water to knock the dirt off any surface. Pressure washers use significantly less water than most garden hoses and can actually make cleaning pretty fun. There are all kinds of tasks that could be simplified by using a pressure washer but some of the most common things they can help with are below:

Lawnmowers buying guide

A lawnmower is essential to help keep your lawn looking good all year round. But with so many options to choose from and so much technical talk, finding the right one can be challenging.

That's why we're here to help. We'll take you through the different types of lawnmower available, the power sources on offer and all the features to look out for to make mowing your lawn as easy and simple as possible. So whether you have a small patch of grass or a whole field to take care of, we've got the right lawnmower for you.

Before you begin

A few questions about how you’ll be using your mower can help narrow down your shopping options to find the perfect one.

How large is the lawn?

While smaller spaces are better suited to compact, lightweight mowers, larger gardens need a more durable and robust lawnmower. Greater power is needed to get around these broader lawns quickly and easily. Similarly, there are a number of innovative features that will help make even the toughest mowing job simple so look out for these.

Where will the lawnmower be stored?

Before deciding on the size of your lawnmower, think about both access and storage. Do you need to pass through gates in order to mow your back and front gardens? If so, be sure to measure these in advance of buying to avoid snapping up a model too big to fit through the doors. The same is true of where you'll be storing your lawnmower – make sure you can get it into your shed or garage, as well as having enough space to keep it out of the way.

How close is the lawn to a power source?

A power source close to your lawn gives you more options when it comes to your choice of lawnmower. However, don’t fret if your garden is very large or your lawn away from the power source – we have a wide range of mowers to suit every situation and size of garden.

Let's go through your options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy and Good! I bought this product some while ago, has been excellent. I've done some heavy duty brush cutting with this as well as strimming. I would say the brush cutter blade is average, but I bought a different design of blade (3 arm 'star') and I have'nt looked back....excellent!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy (ignore the word Value) This is great, easy to build, runs a treat and starts easy, not like the next version up. Brush cutter is a metal cutter (not plastic as stated) and strimmer line good too. All in all a good buy and easy to operate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A strim in time saves nine The brushcutter is for sale at less than £100 (cheaper if you have a friend/relative who can get the Wednesday discount). I don't know how they can offer it at such a price as it appears well made and solid. It comes in two sections that make storage easier and it is not too heavy. It comes complete with the brush cutter and a strimmer line. I've used it twice now and found both worked well and cut the grass and nettles easily. However, the 'bump' line feed did not seem to work properly if I bumped it on the ground. It needed quite a strike and I didn't want to damage the tool, so I fed it by hand. The instruction book was informative, clear and well written in good English. Once you have assembled it and changed the heads once, you won't need to refer to the instructions as it's easy to use. I found it a little difficult to start at first, but once it was going was fine. Maybe I had flooded it. Recommended product and a good price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Beast: it's awesome Having finally found and bought the correct model (careful - there are a couple that are very similar) I built it in about 40 minutes and the next day took it out into my small but massively overgrown garden/jungle. Trying to start it initially using the instructions wasn't fun but after many attempts I closed the choke and it started immediately. Now I can start it first time every time. First things first - WEAR PROTECtIVE CLOTHES. steel toecap boots - I bought a pair of the JCB nuebuck ones from B&Q, which are comfortable, highly protective and look cool, some safety glasses (not goggles - they make me too hot) and ear plugs. I would simply not use this machine without all of that equipment and I recommend you don't either. As for performance - it's pretty devastating. It will cut through very thick bush branches. I don't know exactly how thick but 2-3cm without any problems I would estimate. My garden is only about 4.5m but 12m but it was massively overgrown from years of neglect. 'The Beast' as I now affectionately call it simply levelled it. I had put aside a whole day to clear the garden but after a single hour I was stood with a coffee admiring the totally clear garden (with the exceptions of some bush stumps that I'll need something even heavier to tackle - most likely my new electric chainsaw). This machine is incredibly good value for money and I just wish I had more garden to clear because it is actually very fun to use. I will take it down to my mum's house in Devon next :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best strimmer/cutter we have purchased We studied all the reviews before purchase It sounded just what we needed, at a good price You need time and patience to put it together. But it will be worth it. Light to handle comes with single harness to take the weight. Big bonus, starts first time, runs a long time on fuel. Safe to use, easy to store away as long handle splits into two Would we buy again, yes definitely, we just hope they stay on the market for a long time. If any doubt we will buy another as a spare.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product. I bought this to clear a very large area at the back of my garden that had everything growing in it...grass, brambles, thistles, reeds, horsetail and other weeds. I was going to show the area no mercy prior to weedkillering it. Both the cutter blade and the strimmer worked superbly. The description says that the cutter blade it plastic, not on mine, its metal and enclosed in a circular cage affair to protect fingers...and the blade. Easy to start although it ran a bit rough to start with. I solved this by just releasing the choke in stages....about a third at a time for about 10 seconds at each stage. Simple warm start....one pull. Another design feature that I was advised on by someone who knows about these things better than I. was that this item has, in effect, a straight shaft from engine to cutting head with a gear at the cutting head end to transfer the power to the head. Some others have a curved shaft from the central join to the cutting head gear. This cannot be a solid shaft, and has to be some sort of flexible drive cable affair, which is more prone to failure.More moving parts. Noise wise, I would suggest ear defenders or good motorcycle ear plugs (or just listen to your iPod etc) for prolonged use, but nothing dramatic for the odd 10 min use. I bought the B&Q starter kit to go with this. This cutter / strimmer is branded under B&Q's Value range, so it remains to be seen how long it provides fault free use and what the after sales service is like. This has failed me in the past, so fingers crossed. All in all a great product.....
