How to build a shed base

How to build a shed base

A firm, level base should be the starting point for any shed or garden building. Without this the structure is likely to be assembled improperly - screw holes will not line up correctly, doors may not fit their doorways and the quality and service life of your shed could be greatly reduced.

There are a number of different options to create the necessary flat and level surface, and we're going to take you through four of them. All are ideal to prevent water collecting around the shed floor and damaging it. These four methods are how to lay:

  • a timber base (also known as a portabase)
  • a plastic base
  • a paved base, and
  • a concrete base

Both paved and concrete bases can't be laid straight onto soft ground and so require a sub-base. A concrete base also has a further extra step - constructing the frame or edging that supports concrete while it sets, this is known as formwork. So do bear in mind that these options can take longer to build than the timber and plastic bases.

Simply choose the one for you and read through the step-by-step advice on how to lay your shed base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent value! I bought this about three weeks ago and had a couple of friends put it together for me. I think its a very nice looking shed, and excellent value, I've seen similar sheds at twice the price, so I'm very pleased!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy shed I bought this online and am really satisfied . All the components of a good quality and construction and all the parts were delivered in easily identifiable packets. When I followed the assembly instructions I found everything assembled well. Painting the panels first was good advice .Thank you for a very handy shed that fit well into the space I had available . The large double doors are a great advantage .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what we wanted and value for money. I bought this from the Leicester store where dianne and terry where so helpful. I'd never bought a shed before. They assisted me in buying the correct shed for me and made the whole experience easy. Thank you very much, you made my day x

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to build, Ok Quality I bought this shed around 3-4 years ago from B&Q. Worth noting that I've seen this same shed for as little as £120 in store. We paid £129 in store. Check your local store before buying online! Built on my own whilst entertaining a 3 year old at the same time. Goes together easy enough. Materials are a bit cheap but what do you expect for the price? Ours has been painted twice in the 3-4 years we've had it and it's showing no signs of rot so far. The only issues I have had is that the doors sag due to the lack of diagonal bracing on the back. Easily sorted if you're handy. Can't fault it other than now being too small for my needs. I may buy another and bolt them together to make a long 8x6.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's ok I bought this a month ago and so far it's been ok. It definitely requires two people to build even if one is simply holding things in place. And electric screwdriver is necessary. The wood is quite cheap so there are places where it has chipped when nails have been put through. And the pieces don't all fit together if it's slightly out. But does the job, keeps my kid's toys away from rain etc

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy with shed This shed was easy to assemble although the roof panels slightly out of shape which didn't matter in the long run, the worst part is painting it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor instructions, decent size shed The instructions to assemble this are very poor; tiny, unclear diagrams and not enough detail about how to go about each step of construction. We also had to improvise in a few areas because of poor craftsmanship on some of the pieces as they either didn't fit, or were bent. The floor is very thin, I wouldn't want to store anything really heavy in there. Having said that, the design is great - two fold out doors is perfect for us, and there is a good size inside for storing the tools for my (small) garden.
