Help & Advice

How to guides

How to build a shed base

How to build a shed base

A firm, level base should be the starting point for any shed or garden building. Without this the structure is likely to be assembled improperly - screw holes will not line up correctly, doors may not fit their doorways and the quality and service life of your shed could be greatly reduced.

There are a number of different options to create the necessary flat and level surface, and we're going to take you through four of them. All are ideal to prevent water collecting around the shed floor and damaging it. These four methods are how to lay:

  • a timber base (also known as a portabase)
  • a plastic base
  • a paved base, and
  • a concrete base

Both paved and concrete bases can't be laid straight onto soft ground and so require a sub-base. A concrete base also has a further extra step - constructing the frame or edging that supports concrete while it sets, this is known as formwork. So do bear in mind that these options can take longer to build than the timber and plastic bases.

Simply choose the one for you and read through the step-by-step advice on how to lay your shed base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great looking. I built this a few days ago, I stained it first and was easy to install and looks fantastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice shed Was concerned by some other reviews about floor and complexity. However, very easy to assemble, clear instructions. Got it up in a day by myself. Floor is sturdy as-is. Not disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant little shed Excellent little corner shed. Well put together and so simple to build. It took 2 of us 4 hours to get it from flat packed to water tight, not including the time to treat the the panels before assembly. The instructions are easy to follow and if read carefully and common sense is used it is really straight forward. The doors and windows fit well the roof just slotted on and nothing needed trimming or planing to make fit. Yes the floor is a little flimsy but if you have read all the reviews you will have already ordered some 1x1 timber to add an extra set of floor joists underneath and that's all that's needed to make the floor strong. For less than £500 you won't find a better corner shed. Really pleased I bought this shed despite other reviews as it is the perfect little shed for our garden.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a long weekend Loved the shed when it was finished but the instructions were awful and as stated in previous reviews we have had to strengthen the floor before anyone could stand inside. It took 3 of us two full days to put this together. Looks great though!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great looking shed We LOVE this shed. It looks brilliant, but agree with the last reviewer it is difficult to erect. This is not due to the instructions which we found straightforward, but due to the complexity of the building itself. The finish is of a very high quality which does help. If you are prepared to put in the hours you will be very satisfied with the results. My husband and I managed it ourselves, but it did take us 20 hours and a few arguments to get there!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Shed Happy with the result, took a day to erect with the two of us (husband and wife) nothing was too heavy, instruction manual put together in a random order, but easy to follow when once in correct order, it is a challenge to felt the roof when in the corner unless you have access to sides. Would have liked to have had bolts in the bolt package for security. Once painted it looked very nice and there is lots more room inside than we thought. Good quality, all pieces were delivered first time. Would recommend this to anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good price, nice appearance, slightly flimsy This is cheaper than other corner sheds on the market which is why we went for it. The biggest hassle is treating all the panels with wood preservative before actually putting it up - quite time consuming but well worth the effort, particularly on the underside of the floor which you won't be able to access once built. I agree with all the other reviewers about the floor panels - they're really not strong enough, being made of a similar gauge tongue and groove as the walls. I strengthened it with additional cross members but even so it's a little squeaky. I suspect reinforcing it with some heavier gauge chipboard would sort it out. The instructions aren't as bad as some of the reviewers make out, providing you use a bit of common sense. The main omission in my instructions was how to actually finish the edges of the roof once you've felted it. There are fascia panels included but these don't appear in the instructions anywhere! Basically you nail these on and cut off the surplus felt to give you a neat finish. I'm reasonably proficient with a screwdriver and put this up myself in around 20 - 25 hours (having already prepared the base and applied two coats of wood preservative). I think two people would be able to do it in less than half that time as there are a couple of parts where an extra pair of hands would have saved a lot of time. In use, it looks good and is reasonably solid but a couple of parts are flimsy, notably the doors themselves and the supplied door catch. I'd also recommend making sure the base is as flat and level as possible as otherwise the shed structure itself will skew, meaning the doors may not fit properly in the door aperture. It's also not the most secure shed in the world with the door hinges having exposed screws meaning they could be simply unscrewed in a couple of minutes. I'm going to investigate fitting some internal "piano-style" hinges for better security. All in all though, pretty happy with it, especially at the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks good I started by building a concrete base to the shape of the shed. Still not sure if I should have put bearers down as some DIYers advise. I have been consumed by this project. I spent 10 hours on the Saturday preparing, wood staining etc. The next day I spent another 10 hours putting it up including three hours with two neighbours. The first, main post was warped but we managed to straighten it somehow. I shall buy better inner bolts. There are three cover strips missing. Best advice: Enlarge the instructions on a photo copier double the support batons under the floor and wood stain several times underneath. Over all it looks good and feel pleased with myself.
