How to guides

How to build a shed base

How to build a shed base

A firm, level base should be the starting point for any shed or garden building. Without this the structure is likely to be assembled improperly - screw holes will not line up correctly, doors may not fit their doorways and the quality and service life of your shed could be greatly reduced.

There are a number of different options to create the necessary flat and level surface, and we're going to take you through four of them. All are ideal to prevent water collecting around the shed floor and damaging it. These four methods are how to lay:

  • a timber base (also known as a portabase)
  • a plastic base
  • a paved base, and
  • a concrete base

Both paved and concrete bases can't be laid straight onto soft ground and so require a sub-base. A concrete base also has a further extra step - constructing the frame or edging that supports concrete while it sets, this is known as formwork. So do bear in mind that these options can take longer to build than the timber and plastic bases.

Simply choose the one for you and read through the step-by-step advice on how to lay your shed base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keter 8x6 Apex Plastic Shed.... Very Happy I bought this as my old wooden shed was on its last legs, it looks smart and tidy, it was easy built, about an hour and a half if you have a cordless screwdriver which i recommend, I am very impressed with the build and quality of it and it will be low maintenance and is generally used to store a lawnmower etc and kids bikes, don't know if I would put an expensive bike or tools in it, it looks fairly secure but as with any shed it still is only a shed and if someone wants into it they will get in!! but all and all I am very happy with this shed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product, well made, easy assembly, lone DIYer I bought this Keter 8'x6' Factor resin/plastic shed to replace my old wooden one which had become soft in the lower walls despite regular treatment. I considered but disregarded metal ones because of condensation and the inevitable rust. This shed is made of twin-walled UV-resistant polypropylene and comes with a proper fitted plastic base (unlike some other ones), one polycarbonate window and two internal shelves. I much liked the large double doors on the wide side at the front, high roof space, and the all plastic, maintenance free, rot proof construction. Based on other people's reviews I set aside a complete weekend to put it all together. Although it is easier with two people, it is entirely possible to erect it on your own - with a lot of too-ing and fro-ing. I started by unpacking everything, trimming the excess moulding off some of the parts to ensure a good fit, slicing up the huge cardboard boxes to go in my recyclables wheelie bin, and reading through the instructions. A major issue with these is that they don't tell you until the end that ideally you need to screw the floor to the prepared base - crucial to secure it in gale force winds - and this needs to be done BEFORE you put the walls up. I screwed 8 x 4" stainless steel screws and washers plus big wallplugs into my old flat concrete base, which I had previously treated with two coats of Thompsons Water Seal for good measure, to stop rising damp. I also bought a decent stainless steel hasp and padlock, 2 x 4" stainless cabin hooks to hold the doors back, and various stainless steel screws to replace the basic steel screws for the outside roof clips. (There's no point in having a nice plastic shed if the screws and fittings are going to go rusty in a matter of days.) Day two, sunny and windless, and armed with stepladder, power drill/driver and hammer with an old block of softwood, I had erected most of it within a few hours. It all just clips together in order with a bit of persuasion, and big plastic bolts stop it from falling over while you fetch the next piece. The more screws and bolts you put in the more rigid it all becomes. The black apex roof panels were tricky to clip into place but eventually went in by sliding in from one side, working from the outside on the steps. Once again, the instructions don't mention until it's too late that the two steel support beams in the roof panels happily slide out unless held in place with rubber pads, and need to be lined up with the ones inside on the walls to keep the roof panels from bowing out when they get hot. A bucket of garden soil kept the edges of the roof sheets held down flat while I screwed up into them from inside. The two doors work well but need to be held open or they blow about on a windy day, and a proper concealed folded hasp and padlock is better than the supplied cheap metal clips. It has to be said that security is almost non-existent; a burglar armed with a small penknife could cut a hole in the walls or pop the door hinges. It's probably best to clip together big things like bicycles, spades, strimmers and lawn mowers, using a combination lock bike chain. As everyone says, it's pretty dark inside, and I would have preferred the option of clear twin walled polycarbonate panels for the roof. With no prospect of mains power I settled on a battery powered LED light in the roof. All in all an excellent product; well designed, well made, not difficult to erect, and maintenance free.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great looking shed Bought this a few weeks ago and was delivered last Friday . So I decided to build it on the Saturday . Instruction very easy to follow and had it up in 21/2 hours only needing a second pair of hands when screwing in the last .screws into the roof .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One man and his shed This is an excellent product. It's relatively easy to construct too. I built it on my own in 5 hours. The only point I would raise against it is that all the screws supplied are 'self-tapping'. So even if you drill your own holes as I did, you really need an electric screwdriver to screw in around about 100 screws. If I had an electric screwdriver this would have only taken about 4 hours and my arms would have been saved the pain! Looks fantastic when it's finished, really sturdy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid and easy to put up Ordered this on 29/10, delivery came on 6/11 as promised. It was well packaged (not too much unnecessary polystyrene) in two large boxes. The instructions included were pretty clear, and my husband and I took about 3 or 4 hours to put it up (not including tea breaks!) and I am 40 weeks pregnant so that perhaps gives an idea of how strenuous it is! The shed itself looks great and seems sturdy and watertight. Very happy with our purchase.
