Product information

This hardy shrub makes an attractive focal point for the garden, and has year-round interest. It is an evergreen shrub with interesting oval shaped leaves and leathery peeling cinnamon brown bark. In the autumn, thousands of white scented flowers appear, followed by masses of bright red strawberry-like fruits. The fruits are edible and have a sharp after-taste if eaten raw, but they can be made into jams and preserves for a sweeter, guava-like flavour. The Arbutus Compacta is an ideal specimen shrub for a sheltered area. When first planted out in the garden during the winter, it is vulnerable to frosty conditions, so it’s a good idea to give the Arbutus a garden fleece coat, until it becomes fully established. Compacta likes to be planted in moist but well-drained soil.Product Specifications: Position: Full Sun Height: Up to 150cm (59.1”) when fully established Spread: Up to 150cm (59.1”) when fully establishedDelivered with growing and care instructions.Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary results. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes (e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).

    • outdoors in Sunny areas
    • Average garden soil
    • Flowering period - September - November
    • Repot Strawberry Trees into larger pots using a soil based compost such as John Innes No 3, and grow on in cool conditions until large enough to be planted in its final position. When Arbutus is well grown, transplant into any non alkaline, fertile, moist but free draining soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting. Choose a position in full sun with shelter from cold winds. Although perfectly hardy once mature, Arbutus plants will appreciate a layer of fleece for winter protection when young.
