Drill buying guide

Drill buying guide

A power drill is an essential home improvement tool. They can bore holes, loosen or tighten screws and even chisel away materials. Combine this with the ability to use on a variety of materials, and you'll find that the right drill allows you to easily undertake multiple DIY tasks.

Our handy guide will explain everything you need to know about drills and will help you decide on the best one for you.

Man using a drill

Before you begin

What will you be using the drill for?

Do you need a drill for everyday household tasks like putting up shelves or hanging pictures? Or will it be used as part of a bigger renovation, and need to drill larger holes through bricks or masonry? Most drills have multiple functions, so even if you need a tool that could be used for both scenarios, we have one that could suit you – but knowing a bit about your plans will help narrow down the search.

Another consideration is the length of a particular task. The size and weight of a drill can affect how long you can spend working on your project – if the tool is heavy and bulky you’ll quickly tire of holding it. Make sure you pick a drill that is comfortable for you to handle and you’ll be able to keep working for longer.

Man using hammer drill

Will you need to move freely?

Some of our drill options will need to be plugged into the mains, and can therefore limit your movement. If you are going to use your drill all over your house, and even outside, you may wish to consider another option for your convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Bit Of Kit I bought this to do smaller work as the 1/2" router that I have is a bit heavy for finesse. It is, as always from Bosch an excellent, well made piece of machinery. The plunge lock is positive, the plunge slides easily, the spindle lock feels strong and the quick release of the guide bush is brilliant. No more searching for screws among the sawdust. The only small gripe that I have is that you cannot lock it in the on position. Apart from that it has performed as I would expect. Would definitely recommend.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Be careful! I was very happy when I unpacked this item but within minutes had reluctantly decided that it was useless and had to go back for a refund. I wanted to use it with a dovetailing jig which requires a 12.5mm guide bush. This device uses a non-standard bayonet fit guide bush and the smallest available is 13mm!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bosch router i love Bosch products, they give me the satisfaction of a quality product at an affordable price. they are durable, ergonomically excellent and reliable. This router however does not accept a 1/2 inch collet and is therefore useless for anything other than tiny profiling. B&Q were very good and accepted a return. I was lucky to find a JCB model for only £30 more at £99, which is excellent in every way.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from dissapointed This could have been a nice bit of kit. But was supplied incomplete. Does not come with any cutting bits. And the bushes on the plunger arms are not made to a very high tolerance, to allow for accurate work. Not bad for the price. And okay for the average d.i.y But I took it back and will save intill I can afford a Makita.
