Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, grand and expensive look on bare walls! I bought this paint, very skeptical at first for my kitchen walls which leads onto my through lounge. My walls aren't plastered too great and are very uneven but the decorator managed to get this paint on in 3 coats over magnolia with no complaints or hassle. It looks beautiful if done properly. I was very apprehensive having read previous reviews but it looks absolutely amazing! would definitely recommend it. I got one 2.5l pot, which took 3 coats on 3 part tiled walls with perfect, even coverage and there is still a bit left for another coat if needed!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small areas I used this paint as part of a feature wall in my daughter's bedroom. Using 3 coats seemed to do the trick and get good coverage. The paint is quite watery so I'm not sure how it would look on a large surface but in smaller areas it is beautiful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Now it's finished it looks great I used this to paint the dinning Room. It took me five coats to get an even finish and that was over a previous cream colour and stain block which was used to hide the pen marks the kids had made when they were younger. I would think that it would take even more coats on a dark finnish. Having said that now it's done it provides what appears to be a hard wearing finnish that looks good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from goes on grainy and uneven This promises a nice lustre but in reality looks like a sort of poo colour , very little shine to it and much darker than colour advertised

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointing Applied the correct undercoat before the gold but what a let down. Paint was so thin and it showed on the wall. Our painter was also not impressed by the product. £50 wasted but remedied by using wonderful paper as our feature.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Thin as water This paint is as thin as water, after 7 coats finally looks how it should. Very expensive mind you! As it took so much paint. I wouldn't recommend
