How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from smoothwalls its only eny good for a small area say 2ft by 2ft

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't bother. Waste of money. At the moment I am considering pulling it all off the wall and starting from scratch - it really is that bad. It doesn't stick to the walls, so when you are trying to smooth it over great clumps of it pull away from the wall. It isn't dry two days later (in warm dry conditions) and it is extremely crumbly when it does dry and I am not convinced that it is going to stay on the wall for very long. If you want a quick and easy solution to bumpy walls then get the the Polyfilla version of this. It is, admittedly, twice the price, but you will probably use half the quantity - and it actually works. I have used it before and made the mistake of thinking that this cheaper version might be as good. It isn't. If you want a cheap solution to bumpy walls then go for a finishing plaster that is designed to bond to already painted walls. This will easier to use and will a fraction of the price - you just have to mix it with water - which is hardly difficult. Also the trouble with any ready mixed product (including the Polyfilla version) is that once you open the tub it starts to dry. Which is fine if you are going to use it all in one go - but if you put half a tub of something like this away to use another time, even if its only a few days later, when you come back to it the mixture will have started to dry and will have lumps in it - which with some products won't matter that much, but with a wall smoothing paste that's a bit of a prohibitive problem. But really - stay away form this. It's rubbish,

Rated 1 out of 5 by from worst product I ever seen Absolutely useless. That products should be removed from shelf. The only surface it sticks to is the floor. Do not buy it !!!! It's a pity I can't give negative -10 rating.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sitck with Polycelll product This smoothover was more work than it was worth. Thought it might have been as good as the Difficult to apply, most lands on the floor and Dries grey. not worth the hassle

Rated 1 out of 5 by from deserves a minus rating if it were possible. Awful product. Almost unusable without adding a pint of water to it. Even then it dries on a non porous surface whilst spreading to something resembling glue. Now, i'm pretty good at plastering and thought this product would be cheaper (it is) than the other main brand one as I had a large area to just finish off. Ive done it but boy it was hard work. Next time i will just go and get another bag of plaster which costs £5 and covers far more and much easier. Dont do it, just practice plastering and dont waste your money on this kind of rubbish. I'm sure plasterers invented this to put people off plastering themselves. Shocking.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad product! Every review here describes the product down to a T as well saves me the time of narratting my awful experience with the product. I am new to DIY and plastering and the difficulty with the product nearly discouraged me from plastering. I bought this in store hoping it would do what it says but not at all, at first I became so frustrated with myself thinking I was being a knob at plastering but having read these other reviews I now understand it was the product not me. Do not buy please! !!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from TERRIBLE PRODUCT Buy cheap, pay twice. In this instance I absolutely paid the price and wished that I had read the below reviews before buying this. The product was REALLY dry, instructions advise that should product be dry add a few drops of water, however the product was of a damp powder consistency when tub opened and even when the water was added it refused to adhere to the walls, I kept adding water to try to get it to a creamy smooth consistency that could affectively be troweled onto the walls, but every attempt saw more product on the floor than the walls. I am competent at DIY, however this product tested my skills. DO NOT buy this product, its absolutely not it for purpose

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Difficult to work ŵith Bought this thinking it was like the polycell smooth over. It is very definitely not, difficult to apply doesn't stay on the wall and hard to work as well. Don't buy this either save your money or go the distance and buy the branded product.
