How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dial Exterior White Primer paint I have a verandah built with rough-sawn treated timber with a timber decking and a roof of transparent roof panels with split bamboo screening used as a ceiling under the roof panels to filter the light. This was constructed 11 years ago and the rough timber was showing signs of age. The Dial exterior primer was used to paint over all the rough timber to provide a good base for a finishing coat of pale "Bay Tree" green exterior paint. The white primer provided a perfect base so that none of the greying rough timber with dark brown patches were showing through to spoil the top finishing coat. It provided a perfect barrier to seal the timber with no show-through.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very thin and watery Paid £30 for this after recommendation by paint staff at B& Q to find very thin and watery product. They said a few coats of this then a top coat or two of gloss would be perfect. I also purchased a £30 tin of Ronseal weatherproof white gloss altogether 5 coats of paint and after only few weeks the wood knots are showing through yellow. Not recommended by me as I've never had this happen before with previous other makes of paint (it's too thin).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubbish paint Purchased this undercoat to paint my skirting boards and door frames, what a load of rubbish four coates later and I can still see the old paint through it , Time to stop selling this stuff as paint cos it certainly isn't.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from pretty useless paint I bought this two days ago. It is the thinnest, least effective paint I have ever used, and yes, I stirred it for all the good it did.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Time to take this off the shelves forever Dreadful, thin watery, wazzy stuff. An almost total waste of time. As it is so bad, it's poor value as it's pretty well a waste of money. Needed to be done again with a better product. Do yourselves a favour and steer clear! Was hoping to be able to give it less than one star!
