How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prime Coat I bought this several weeks ago for a small repair job I was undertaking. I wanted an inexpensive primer undercoat and in a small quantity and this Diall White Primer and Undercoat was the best choice. Good value and easy to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, does what it says. I bought this and then saw the reviews and really thought about returning it and buying a branded (and more expensive) primer and undercoat. I decided to stick with it and I've not been disappointed. I'm a novice to this and I found if I use enough on the brush to stop drips, then it goes on really well and gives the required finish ready for the satin / gloss I will be using.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good adhesion. Most of the bad reviews are by DIYers who don't understand what this product is designed to do. It is a thin bonding coat that dries fast. It is not a stain blocker or an opaic white undercoat. It seals the surface of new wood or plaster. Because it dries fast you have to work fast to not disturb the paint as it dries. I have used it as a "primer" over gloss paint oil based paint on woodwork and it did what it said on the tin. It made the top coat of oil based paint stick and have a smooth finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy to use Very effective, gave a good base for the paint.Worked well on untreated wood, wasn't runny or messy. Easy to clean the brushes afterwards.Directions for use were clear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Diall white primer & undercoat Good product had no problem covering bare wood filled small gaps, gloss took well to undercoat nice finished job. Will buy again good price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good undercoat and primer Bought this for new skirting boards and it covered wel, dried as it said on the tin in 4 hours and virtually no odour. Would happily purchase again, but do not over brush as with the gloss that is in this range try not to overbrush as you will find it difficult to rectify mistakes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ok when used properly This product is typical of modern low odour, quick drying, water based paints. Personally, I find the advantages of this product outweigh its disadvantages. Yes it will probably require two coats but it's worth allowing for that to have low odour with a quick drying time. You'll be able to apply to coats of this paint and have it dry (4 hours between coats) far quicker than a single coat of oil based paint
