How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect strait edges.. I bought this form after stressing about uneven cutting in and dodgy edges. Works fantasic giving lovely smooth lines. Done my ceiling and skirting boards, they used this for my darker paint. Put paint onto it with a brush and do one smooth line. Fast and easy!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great straight lines! I bought this as I was struggling cutting in on new plaster which doesn't like masking tape. I was really impressed with the results! Perfectly straight lines. I was really surprised to se other negative reviews of this product. My opinion of these would be that the reviewers have not used the pad to its best advantage. Of course if you saturate the pad with paint it will be difficult to handle and go all over the ceiling.....but what worked with me was: 1. paint your ceiling white with a slight overlap of white onto the adjacent wall. 2. use a paint brush to paint your colour on to the top edge of the pad, not too much, not too little...don't let the paint go on to the top edge of the pad (which will make contact with the ceiling and colour it!!) Hey presto straight lines! Ok, the only thing would be that your line may not be TOTALLY flush with the exact join of the ceiling/wall but that will depend on your own walls. Mine is extremely close/exact in places and at the end of the day there is a totally straight line of colour along the top of my walls that looks great and took 5 mintues!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Dissapointing These pads are very good for painting into corners however I became increasingly irritated when using as the pad kept sliding out of the holder and covered you in paint as you try to refit. Gave up in the end.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from rubbish rubbish on edges and pad fell off while painting gave up went back to using roller

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst ever!! Worst paint pad I have ever used. It retained so much paint but left such thin uneven coverage. Had to put pressure on back of pad to get paint on to wall. A waste of time, money and paint.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from absolutely useless pad keeps jumping out of the frame, a useless and expensive waste of time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very frustrating This a Harris product and I would have expected it to have been thought through properly. The pad itself has to be carefully loaded so as not to get paint on the surface being edged to - that is down to user care - no problem there. The fibre technology is excellent and is one of the best pads I have used - that is the reason for one star. My first application was edging to an architrave and it covered the whole length beautifully and accurately in one stroke - impressive! However, the paint pad started popping out of the frame and the mess of putting it back in each time.......... had to clean up between each re fitting, which turned a half hour job into one an hour long. Don't companies like Harris test these things before production?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The worst thing I have ever bought This is quite possibly the worst single purchase I have ever made. For such a simple product to fail on quite so many levels is actually quite impressive. The pad has been designed such that it is impossible to not get any paint on the outer edge, which smears your paint all over the very wall that you are trying to avoid. Also, the pad itself is far too flimsy to remain within the holder/handle, causing it to constantly fall out and launch paint onto your floors, walls, sink, legs and anything else in the vicinity. The packaging promises: - "Effortless painting": False - "Fast results": True, if the results you are seeking involve paint splodges on every surface and excessive levels of frustration - "Smooth precision": Lies, all lies - "Neat edges": I think by this point that they had resorted to sarcasm Save your £5 note. Or burn it. Or use it to smear paint onto your walls and face. Any of these are better use of money than buying this product.
