How to understand building & planning regulations

How to understand building & planning regulations

What are planning and building controls? Why do they exist? Can you deal with them yourself or is it best to ask a specialist? As with any task, you can decide for yourself when you know exactly what's involved.

First of all, it's important to understand what planning and building regulations are. It's easy to think of them as restrictive, bureaucratic tools put in place purely to thwart your ambitions. However, they're essential safety mechanisms which have been designed to protect you, your neighbours and the local environment.

The regulatory bodies will give you permission to carry out your plans unless there are very good reasons not to - in which case they must explain their decision. And if you disagree, you have the right to appeal against it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good angle Bought this specifically to do some skirting board, walls not too square, and it worked a treat. A great little tool for the DIYer, and it is well made for the price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No good for walls Does not fit into wall corner Bought this to measure angle of adjoining walls and chimney breast to put up floating shelf. Unfortunately the handle juts out from the slide so you cannot get it into the corner to measure the angle - useless! (Although presumably it will be fine for measuring angles on wood)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from RUBBISH I bought this as i wanted to hang floating shelves under the stairs & needed to find the angle to cut the shelf ends. The stock is slightly wider than the bevel therefore impossible to get any angle using the outer edge of the bevel. Also the built in level isn't level....not even close!! All in all a £9 piece of rubbish that deserves no stars!!!
