Drills buying guide

Drills buying guide

A power drill is an essential home improvement tool. They can bore holes, loosen or tighten screws and even chisel away materials. Combine this with the ability to use on a variety of materials, and you'll find that the right drill allows you to easily undertake multiple DIY tasks.

Our handy guide will explain everything you need to know about drills and will help you decide on the best one for you.

Man using a drill

Before you begin

What will you be using the drill for?

Do you need a drill for everyday household tasks like putting up shelves or hanging pictures? Or will it be used as part of a bigger renovation, and need to drill larger holes through bricks or masonry? Most drills have multiple functions, so even if you need a tool that could be used for both scenarios, we have one that could suit you – but knowing a bit about your plans will help narrow down the search.

Another consideration is the length of a particular task. The size and weight of a drill can affect how long you can spend working on your project – if the tool is heavy and bulky you’ll quickly tire of holding it. Make sure you pick a drill that is comfortable for you to handle and you’ll be able to keep working for longer.

Man using hammer drill

Will you need to move freely?

Some of our drill options will need to be plugged into the mains, and can therefore limit your movement. If you are going to use your drill all over your house, and even outside, you may wish to consider another option for your convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent addition to wall tiling kit. Great piece of kit to cut various size holes in wall tiles and also useful ( with "scribe" removed) to drill pilot hole in tiles prior to plugging. Excellent value and highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use, but go on a SLOW speed Just bought it. Was so easy to use on the Hampton Ripple tile. Just take your time, and it will be right first time. You must wear safety glasses as the ceramic does splinter. Ten out of Ten

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bit of kit Bought this today with some apprehension after seeing mid ratings. Follow the simple rules of taking it easy, check the tightness of the arm before starting and when you get half way through, drill from the back side of the tile. No worries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked well for me! Looked at the reviews and was a bit unsure, but at the price I took a chance. Used cordless drill on low speed and plenty of water. Drilled 7 holes in total - 4 x 20mm, 1 x 35mm, 1 x 40mm & 1 x 42mm. A couple of the holes were about 10mm from the edge of the tile. All cut without any problems. By the time I came to the last hole the cutting blade was starting to get blunt, but it finished the hole just took a bit longer. At this price I'm not worried I will just buy another for the next project. My tip is, When starting a hole to stop the bit from slipping off put a cross of insulation tape in the centre (but cut the pieces just smaller than the dia of the hole) Use plenty of water and run the drill really slowly and let the tool do the work. It take a little bit of time but you will achieve a perfect hole

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Cutter As mentioned on a previous review, due to the price I wasn't expecting a great deal.... How wrong I was, this little hole cutter was perfect. For the bathroom a am doing I needed to cut two holes in the same tile for the shower pipes. It did this perfectly. My advice is to take your time. The cutter is offset so the speed needs to be slow, otherwise you can get a bit of a wobble. Also, when cutting tiles the speed should be slow anyway, so as not to overheat and burn out the cutting tips. I would recommend this to any one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Titles Cutter Top mark A simple tools that work perfectly, nees it this to get the water pipe and electric through the tile, this is the tool= for the job. My advice is to practice on a cut off piece of title to see how it work and to check if the hole is the right one. Take your time and let the drill do it work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not As Advertised!! Hi, be aware this only goes upto a max of 45mm RADIUS giving a hole of 90mm DIAMETER. Scale markings on units' arm refer to final DIAMETER of hole
