How to understand building and planning regulations

How to understand building and planning regulations

What are planning and building controls? Why do they exist? Can you deal with them yourself or is it best to ask a specialist? As with any task, you can decide for yourself when you know exactly what's involved.

First of all, it's important to understand what planning and building regulations are. It's easy to think of them as restrictive, bureaucratic tools put in place purely to thwart your ambitions. However, they're essential safety mechanisms which have been designed to protect you, your neighbours and the local environment.

The regulatory bodies will give you permission to carry out your plans unless there are very good reasons not to - in which case they must explain their decision. And if you disagree, you have the right to appeal against it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I saw it I wanted some wood, got the plank but B & Q do not cut planks. I live some 32 miles round trip away, nearly a gallon of petrol. "Arrr," said the sawman, "Buy a saw, they are cheap, cut the wood in the car park." I checked for a saw and it was well under the price of a gallon of petrol. Bought one, job done. Good suggestion B & Q.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't be beaten on value for money Saws don't last so why pay good money for one. I bought this saw simply because my "good one" was a bit past it. This one was excellent and at this price you would have to go through 4 to get to the cost of a half decent one. Whats more, you have 4 sets of new sharp teeth! If one gets blunt just throw it away and start again with a new one. Simple

Rated 1 out of 5 by from useless I bought this saw and tried to cut some wood but gave up almost immediately. I didn't expect it to last very long at the price but it's completely useless. It's not sharp at all and the steel is so thin it just flexes and buckles if you put on the slightest pressure. It's gone in the bin. A complete waste of money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful! Poor quality saw, flexes when in use. Struggled to even cut through a batten. Not fit for purpose, better to buy the 2 for £10 Predator saw or the orange Jackson Saw which are good.
