Drills buying guide

Drills buying guide

A power drill is an essential home improvement tool. They can bore holes, loosen or tighten screws and even chisel away materials. Combine this with the ability to use on a variety of materials, and you'll find that the right drill allows you to easily undertake multiple DIY tasks.

Our handy guide will explain everything you need to know about drills and will help you decide on the best one for you.

Man using a drill

Before you begin

What will you be using the drill for?

Do you need a drill for everyday household tasks like putting up shelves or hanging pictures? Or will it be used as part of a bigger renovation, and need to drill larger holes through bricks or masonry? Most drills have multiple functions, so even if you need a tool that could be used for both scenarios, we have one that could suit you – but knowing a bit about your plans will help narrow down the search.

Another consideration is the length of a particular task. The size and weight of a drill can affect how long you can spend working on your project – if the tool is heavy and bulky you’ll quickly tire of holding it. Make sure you pick a drill that is comfortable for you to handle and you’ll be able to keep working for longer.

Man using hammer drill

Will you need to move freely?

Some of our drill options will need to be plugged into the mains, and can therefore limit your movement. If you are going to use your drill all over your house, and even outside, you may wish to consider another option for your convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great DIY or semi-pro tool Bought 3 of these 6 years ago cos there were no spare batteries available there would always be one fully charged. They have all had substantial use on a daily basis in my business within the limits of their specification. Remember these are not professional tools! I use the Hitachi for the big jobs. Right tool for the job applies here. After 6 years the batteries have started to get a bit weak (NEVER OVERCHARGE NI-CAD IT KILLS THEM QUICKLY) so have bought 3 new ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GOOD Durability at this price come on Well I have had my first drill of this make for more than 4 years and I was so impressed (its still performing well) I bought another three at different times over the years and I have to say why buy another battery when you get one with the drill included (and another charger) I am only a diyer so you pros might need something a bit more meatier but have to say it ticks all the boxes for me :O)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good quality product easy to use, a good torque for a 12v drill deals with the work quite easily ,however very difficult getting hold of a second battery without which you have to top up during a lengthy job which is not good because its a NiCad battery which suffer from the memory affect ,a second battery should be made available

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for a DIY'er I purchased this to replace a cheapo driver a purchased 2 years ago. All I need it to do is to drive screws. Does this with ease. I am more than happy with it based on the price. It has no hammer drill function as it describes but I have a SDS for this anyway. It would be nice to a spare battery but based on the price I am not going to grumble. It does come with a 2 year warranty so as long as it last this length of time I am happy. My only grumble is there isn't enough settings "torque"settings. I found putting it on its lowest settings on soft material can still have a tendancy to chew the created threads. My cheaper previous drill had a wider torque range allowing for this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value for use on basic DIY jobs I've owned one of these drills for about 3 years. I use it for light diy such as putting up mirrors, assembling flatpack furniture etc. It is well built and good value for the money. I don't know why others reviewers have to charge the battery for so long. Mine takes 2-3 hours to charge, which I think is reasonable. The batteries also hold the charge well, so I know it's ready to go even if it's been unused for a month. It's reasonably powerful - it can just about drill a hole through a cavity brick wall e.g. for a tv aerial. Overall I'm pleased with this drill and am considering getting another so that I don't have to keep swapping drill bits and screwdriver blades over to complete a job

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Did the Job I wanted something reasonably priced to put together decking. I haven't used it as a drill yet but it did a really nice job of screwing in deck screws through 32mm deck boards (green/pressure treated, not hardwood) but it accomplished this with ease and so I imagine it would have coped with harder woods. Overall its light and easy to use with one trigger which is easy to pull slowly for maximum control of speed. For most jobs around the house I think this would suit most folk and you certainly can't complain about the price. So far battery life seems good and after one five hour charge it lasted about a day and half of deck screwing!
