How to guides

How to dry-line a wall

How to dry-line a wall

Dry-lining a wall means attaching plasterboard to a wall, which gives you a smooth finish to decorate straight away. It's much easier to get a good result this way than with wet plaster and it is easier alternative to re-plastering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results I have used this on 2 walls where the plaster wasn't very good and had great results. It takes time and you need to go slowly but after a little rubbing down I had a fantastic finish. It's not cheap but am very pleased with the finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and did the job Had a wall that was structurally sound but with a very poor surface due to top of plasterboard having come off in places (attached to wallpaper) and some previously (badly) repaired areas. Applied this in a fairly thin coat (about 2mm). Easy to put on, except for getting to edges that I filled later. A little rubdown and all good. Just be careful not to overwork...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what we needed After taking down old lining paper we discovered the plasterboard underneath was patchy, damaged and covered with flaking paint. With the alternative being a plasterer or putting up thick lining paper I think this product is really great and has achieved a lovely smooth wall ready for painting. We did notice that you need to act quickly and smooth as you go as it does dry quite quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take your time and you'll get a perfect finish I had various problem areas in my room after stripping the wall paper. I used lightweight filler (just discovered that too.. so much better than the regular stuff) on big holes and chips. Once that was set and sanded down I worked on small areas with this stuff, perhaps a couple of square foot at a time and was amazed with the results. It's a little runny so getting it from the roller to wall requires a swift hand but one you've rolled it on you can smooth it out using the tool. Once I'd had a bit of practice I found a nice wide filling knife gave a better finish. This stuff sands down really easily by hand afterwards so don't be alarmed by any imperfections, I cant achieve the perfect finish in the video on the polycell website but because it sands nicely it's no problem. On really problem areas I used a bit of filler again after sanding if I left any craters and the occasional second coat. I only did patches around the room and it's all blended in perfectly. I know it says this is for ceilings but from my experience and other reviews I think it's far too sloppy for ceilings. Only downside is the tools are sold separately

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does a good job to be proud of. I bought this item some time ago. I didn't use a roller but put it on with a very wide plastic spreader. It covered a previously tiled area size approx 40cm by 300cm in the kitchen after I'd knocked the tiles off. I bought a sanding mesh, not sandpaper and a purpose made block to hold it and roughly sanded it down. I added a second coat with the spreader and again rubbed it down flat as before. It gave me a perfect finish just right for painting. It is expensive but there again its four times as good as plaster or filler and is very easy to rub down for a novice like me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product Purchased this product rather than have my dining room walls plastered. They were marked and had lots of knocks. Product worked really well. So pleased. Nicely smoothed over. Definitely worth trying!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Use a plastered float I used this on original old fashioned plaster on a 100 year old house.. Looks more like cement fixed to lattes than modern plaster... I tried plastering before as a diy man ,it's quite hard to do,messy,..and hard work with rubbish results if you've not done it before.... Allthough a big bag a plaster only cost not much more than a fiver if you can get hang of it. I found this product quite easy to use without to much mess After doing the first 2 walls with the sepratley sold tools which I thought were over prices at £15 to £20 and half of it ended up on the floor as it falls off the roller quite easyly, ... I used a wallpaper scraper to spoon the smooth over out of the tub and stuck a blob of the stuff on the wall any old how and none of it went on the floor... Once there spread it out with the plastering tool that cost about £6 and spread it out over the walls maybe about 1mm thick thus it went much further and quicker and none on the floor... Quick sand after and its 90% better than it was before and am overall happy with my results as for me 90% was good enough.. I could have achieved better results by applying a thicker or 2 coats but at a couple hundred pound a room it was good enough using 6 tubs rather than 10 tubs for a 13ft x13ft room. At £24 a tub it's expensive and doesn't go very far but cheaper than having your room re scimmed by a plasterer... I'd use it again
