How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Did not perform as expected It slipped pooling in places. Was not smooth enough to paint over. When i took it off it removed the paint below. I am now having to have wall replastered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty good results...Although a bit expensive I used this to repair and resurface some patchy cracked walls in an average sized bathroom that I wanted to be able to just paint. I followed the instructions and took a little care and attention and got pretty good results, after a light sanding it was a good flat surface to paint. I also needed to touch in the edges afterwards where it had missed. It could work out very expensive though if you needed to do full walls or a larger area, although it works well if you need to just patch over certain areas using the recommended smoothover tools and blends in well after a light sanding.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use for a first timer I had very uneven walls which also had lines all the way round from a border the previous occupants had used. As a first time user, I found that it was tiring to do, but simple enough if you took your time. I did it in squared sections working my way round the room. I had to do a heavy bit of sanding in one section because I ran out and had to buy more. The join looked awful so took a bit of time to fix. It took 3 tubs to do a room 2.2m x 4.5m (plus a bit of the ceiling). Overall I'm happy with the outcome and will be using this when i am redecorating the other bedrooms in the house.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but expensive, and needs a bit of practice. I find this stuff excellent for patching because its easy to get a feather edge with no need for sanding. But I've also done whole ceilings and walls too, including covering artex stipples, and have managed a smooth surface needing no sanding. However, you may need two coats for poor surfaces, and it is expensive. The smoothing tools are good but need a bit or practice to get a smooth line and wave free surface.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No sucess Have doneboth artex repairs and artex i got, so thought this idea would be quick and simple. After several attempts, scraped it all of and gave up. could get neither smooth finish not good cohesion to existing surface.
