How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect I have done all my fences with this Dark oak, soaks in well and a good finish and I like the fact that you can wash your brushes in water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product Does exactly what it says on the tin. I am coming back to this for the second time after trying an inferior fence protector. The difference is visible even on opening the tub. It's not thin and drippy like other products and usually one coat is enough. Very easy to use and the finish is excellent. You may pay a bit more but you get what you pay for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good and quick not quite as dark as sample shows has more red in it works well with sprayer
Date published: 2014-04-22
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very thin and watery product. Not like mentioned in previous reviews. When painting panels in a vertical position it dripped and splashed. You would not be able to paint the panels in their posts without getting paint on the posts or gravel boards. Not as dark as I hoped from the colour on the tin. 2 stars is based on the reasonable price. I won't use it again. Time will tell if it lasts the 5 years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It's not dark it's brown I bought this paint as have always used this but it's just not dark it's mid Brown very unhappy

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ronseal 5 year fencelife I had 9 x 6 by 6ft panels to paint. It is not mentioned clearly on the front of the tin that it requires 2 coats! Nor does it give coverage for what Ronseal claim. It covered little over half. The spray on paint isn't any better for coverage either. What is equally disappointing is the fact it has barely lasted a year on my other fence when the tin states 2 years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dark Oak is actually reddish brown and streaky. This is Ronseal's more expensive fence paint. I bought it to renovate a fence previously painted in dark oak as in the B&Q illustration above and the Ronseal sample colour on the can. I paid the premium for the product as it promised excellent one coat coverage. I stirred the paint well and applied with plenty on the brush, without trying to spread it thin. The paint is very thin and not at all opaque. I found myself redoing areas that were painted but the pigment would not cover the existing surface; effectively it was clear in many spots. The paint looks reddish brown in the container and dries exactly that colour. It is not in any way a dark oak colour. It's more like red cedar and I did wonder whether Ronseal had put the wrong labels on the containers, of which I foolishly bought four to do the full job. The colour is light years away from the Ronseal colour on the container and the B&Q illustrated fence panel colour is completely wrong. That is the B&Q illustration is dark oak but the product it is selling is not. I have A1 colour vision so this is not a colour blindness issue. This is a poor product and emphatically not what it says on the tin. Here's a picture of the results: real dark oak on the left; Ronseal's streaky so-called dark oak product on the right.
