How to prepare a wall for painting

How to prepare a wall for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Product Used this product to treat my fence panels I applied it using wood paint brush there were very few drips and the coverage was excellent with just one coat (panels treated previously two years ago). I was also pleased with the colour which was a true depiction of the one on the container. Does what it says on the tin! I would recommend this product one of the best I have used.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Colour is NOT "medium oak"! I bought this paint expecting a medium brown colour. It looks very orange in the tin, but it does say that it dries a darker colour, so I put two coats on a section of my new fence. The final colour is dark orange not at all what I wanted. When I returned to B&Q I found that they had Country Oak available in the Ronseal 5-year weather defence range on the shelf (though it is not, as I write this, on the B&Q website, nor the Ronseal website). I bought Country Oak and painted another section of the fence - and this is a nice mid-brown colour which I am happy with. It would be very useful to have small test pots available for these fence paints - it would have saved me a bit of time and money. I have no complaints about the quality of the paint. It is easy to apply, and time will tell if it weathers well. However do not buy "medium oak" unless you really want a dark orange fence.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT what is says on the tin! I thought I purchased a nice medium oak brown colour. Flipped the lid open and it's dark orange!!! I wanted the colour that I saw above you on the picture, and it's not the nice brown colour that you see. It'sDARK ORANGE! Don't buy it if you want brown. Flip the lid in the showroom and ckeck the colour first, as it doesn't have a tab to break off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor product I painted 250 meters of fence with this paint last September, within three months my fence was bright green with algae. When it says five years, I expect my fence to look painted for most of that time. Will never use this product again.
