How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality product After reading a few of the reviews and with 1 review saying it was not a once coat finish and that they used a double the amount I was a bit skeptical on using it. However i had already told the customer i was using ronseal so i went ahead an bought it anyway. I was more than happy with the product It says on the 5L tin it will cover 6 fence panels, if you are using a good quality spray gun and compressor it will do 10 panels with ease. I cant comment on the other types of sprayers available as i have not used them before. It only takes 1 coat and dries to a lovely natural red cedar colour. My customer is over the moon with the colour and how quick the job went. If your reading reviews and only 1 person has slated the product they probably didn't do the job right in the first place. The only quibble I have is the price (I'm a Yorkshireman if it was free i would still moan about the price) but this was a little overpriced at Nearly £12 for 5L.Top product go buy it you wont be disappointed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from does what it says on the tin I did wonder if one coat spray on would do, it does! When sprayed first it looks like it might be patchy but dries to a perfect finish. Buy it! Much quicker than brushing by a mile.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to apply and dries to a nice colour. Looks orange when first applied which is a bit daunting but dries to a nice colour. Easy to clean brushes and unwanted splashes. A VAT receipt would have been helpful.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Love the color but This is NOT one coat I have given two stars as I love the color of this paint but it definitely needs more than one coat. Its very thin and watery (to make it sprayable i expect) and so its really messy to use and gets everywhere (that it shouldn't). I thought this would be a quicker and easier way to color the fences but not so - too much messing about refilling the spray tank, cleaning spills etc. Coverage: It states on the tin that it covers eleven panels (9L size). We have 13 panels and have gone through 2x 9L and will need to buy more for a second coat. Not sure if the paint on version would have given better coverage but the spray on type, for me, is false economy as in the long run its more time and more money.
