Drill buying guide

Drill buying guide

A power drill is an essential home improvement tool. They can bore holes, loosen or tighten screws and even chisel away materials. Combine this with the ability to use on a variety of materials, and you'll find that the right drill allows you to easily undertake multiple DIY tasks.

Our handy guide will explain everything you need to know about drills and will help you decide on the best one for you.

Man using a drill

Before you begin

What will you be using the drill for?

Do you need a drill for everyday household tasks like putting up shelves or hanging pictures? Or will it be used as part of a bigger renovation, and need to drill larger holes through bricks or masonry? Most drills have multiple functions, so even if you need a tool that could be used for both scenarios, we have one that could suit you – but knowing a bit about your plans will help narrow down the search.

Another consideration is the length of a particular task. The size and weight of a drill can affect how long you can spend working on your project – if the tool is heavy and bulky you’ll quickly tire of holding it. Make sure you pick a drill that is comfortable for you to handle and you’ll be able to keep working for longer.

Man using hammer drill

Will you need to move freely?

Some of our drill options will need to be plugged into the mains, and can therefore limit your movement. If you are going to use your drill all over your house, and even outside, you may wish to consider another option for your convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bit of kit I purchased this drill a couple of weeks ago as unfortunately upgrade for current ryobi drill and I'm in no way disappointed it has held up to every task I have thrown at it it's comfortable in the hand and surprisingly not to heavy even with the 5.0ah battery my only don't side is I purchased it at £227 which is a good price then to find that it was reduced a week later to £207 £20 is £20 but still very happy with it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it. It's expensive but if you consider that the batteries are £98 & charger is £37, you get an excellent drill & carrying case free. I've driven loads of screws with it & drilled a few holes through brick so far & the first battery I've used is still showing full charge. It's light & compact as well. I bought it to replace my old screaming Ryobi & I'm very pleased with it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from NOT FOR THE PROFESSIONAL TRADESMAN!!!! When i bought this product i was hoping it was going to last longer than 6 months but i thought wrong. It worked fine good strong drill and good build on the outside. i used it along side with my milwaukee m18 and although its nearly 3 times the price they seemed to be on the same level until i noticed it was not engaging some gears straight away and then the chuck had ceased solid cant tighten or loosen no idea what kind of warranty this has but its going straight in the bin luckily i can use the batteries on the grinder i bought. overall if your a diy beast then this for you but if your thinking about this for your profession then dont spend abit more and buy a milwaukee.
